Alegria

Barge Lady's Caroline Sack Klein (Director of Operations) visited Alegria in 2014. Here is her report.  "French owner/captain Olivier Baudry operated passenger barges on the River Seine in Paris, followed by 15 years in the travel industry in South Africa. It is clear upon arrival that the style and decor of Olivier's French barge has been influenced by his years in South Africa. The salon boasts comfortable red leather couches, and native art accent pieces. There is a petite swimming pool on deck, and massive circular windows in every room. The cabins are very nicely sized with ample storage space.  Each cabin had a mini fridge stocked with the guest’s favorite drinks – what a thoughtful touch! A private staircase leads from the cabins directly to the swimming pool. I adored the Alegria and cannot wait to return soon."

Accommdating private parties of 4, Alegria is a wonderful chouce for small groups seeking personable service and attention to detail.  The majestic Canal du Midi is a lovely choice to relax and watch the world pass by as guests enjoy time on deck, while the crew caters to every need. We are very excited to offer Alegria - the Canal du Midi's only "boutique barge!"

New - Family Fun on Alegria!

Parents can relax and watch their children have fun aboard Alegria! When the kids are not cavorting in the pool, they will enjoy horseback riding, sunning on a Mediterranean beach and visits to a goat farm, water park, kayaking and prehistoric sites. Captain Olivier will take care of everything – providing the best of floating fun in France!

Alegria, Canal du Midi Barge Cruise Itinerary

Beziers to puicheric(Carcassonne) on the Canal du Midi

Saturday: Beziers to Poilhes
Warm Welcome Aboard!
From 4pm we have the pleasure of welcoming you at the train station, airport, rental car office or local hotel, all in Beziers or immediate environs. (The cost of transfers to/from the cruise route is additional to the cruise fare and must be booked separately.)  After you settle down on the barge, you'll a welcome drink of a glass of Champagne and the crew will be introduced to you. Alegria might even take you for a short introductory cruise, depending on the navigation conditions. We'll also explain you how the week will work and we'll give you the necessary instructions for your stay on board. We'll serve your first dinner and spend the night in Poilhes, our "home mooring".

Sunday: Poilhes to La Croisade
Famous Staricase Locks of Fonserannes
On this Sunday morning our guide proposes you a “multi-site” excursion: the City of Béziers, the famous “stair case” of the Nine Locks of Fonsérane, the archeological (6th century BC) site of the Oppidum of Ensérune, and the Malpas Tunnel, the first tunner built in the world for a canal. After the lunch (or during lunch… depending on the weather conditions) you cruise to La Croisade and pass underneath the lowest bridge on the Canal: the famous bridge of Capestang. Mind you head! This 18km cruise is typical with its numerous meanders: yes the Canal actually looks like a River! After this four-hour cruise the dinner is served onboard and you spend the night in a restful place, a stone's throw away from ... an old 17th century stone bridge.

Monday: La Croisade to Le Somail
Dinner out at a Local Auberge
In the morning we cruise slowly to Le Somail, one of the most charming villages along the Canal. Should you need a book for the week you can buy one from a unique book shop that has approximately 50 000 second-hand books in stock ... in many different languages! In the afternoon you may chose to relax on the barge, roam around, cycle, etc but we also propose you to visit a wine farm or an olive mill nearby, or any other site that might suit your wishes. At the end of the day you are invited for the Captain's Dinner in a local auberge. It's the perfect opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of a French restaurant!

Tuesday: Le Somail to Roubia
Fortified village high in the hills
In the morning you go to one of the best market in the region, in Olonzac. Youcan look and buy anything you wish, from a provençal table cloth to special olives locally grown (well… we have some on board too!). Then the guide takes you to Minerve, a fascinating site and a previously fortified village in a very special rocky environment. Minerve was attacked in 1210 by the terrible army led by Simon de Montfort: the right time for us to tell you everything about the Crusade of the Albigeois in the 13th Century, one of the harshest stories of our past … The afternoon cruise takes you to the typical Minervois village of Roubia for the overnight mooring. The dinner is served onboard.

Wednesday: Roubia to Homps
Lunch out in fascinating Narbonne - go shopping, too!
In the morning you visit a beautiful town, Narbonne. Narbonne is full of Roman history and includes the "Palace of the Archbishop". You will love its Mediterranean and Gothic style. And ... you will be offered lunch there in a typical restaurant that has some fish specialties. After lunch you are driven back to the barge for the afternoon cruise. You pass your first lock after Roubia and we cruise to the port of Homps, one of the busiest harbors in the old times of the Canal commercial era.

Thursday: Homps to Puicheric
Carcassonne - Europe's largest extant Medieval city
In the morning you visit the great City of Carcassonne, the biggest medieval City in Europe. You are just fascinated by the size of the walls and the narrow streets inside. You are right there in the middle of French history! There also many shops where you can buy typical souvenirs to bring back to friends or children. After lunch you embark on the last leg of the cruise for the week, from Homps to the area of Puichéric. You pass the last lock of the cruise and you can admire the wooden and iron sculptures made by the most famous lock-keeper on the Canal. The barge is moored just on top of this most beautiful lock. You spend your last night onboard Alegria after the Farewell Dinner prepared by our Chef.

Friday: Carcassonne Transfer
A Sad Farewell
After your breakfast, it is unfortunately time to conclude this unforgettable cruise. We will transfer you back to the train station, airport, rental car office or local hotel, all in Carcassonne or immediate environs. … so that you can continue your adventure in Europe or wherever!!!

Please note: this is a sample itinerary which may be subject to change depending on local conditions. The route will run in reverse on alternate weeks. Alegria Guest Book

"I highly recommend this to anyone wanting a very intimate, relaxing, luxurious experience! The boat was beautiful and the attention to detail was impeccable. Captain Olivier was amazing. The food was 'over the top'! All I can say is YOU NEED TO DO THIS..."

- Kathleen Wilson, cruised September, 2015

"This was an AWESOME trip! Alegria was the best! Beginning to end. From the places we stayed, to the sites we visited, to the barge we loved relaxing on, to the food we ate and the wine -- oh my the wine! The Captain, Hostess, and Deck Hand were so gracious and accommodating -- but the real kudos must go to the Chef! Unbelievable meals. Everyone needs to experience a canal hotel barge cruise. This trip was everything I imagined and more."

“First rate experience with a terrific captain and crew aboard a fantastic barge. All members of the crew were fantastic. Exactly the right amount of interaction and friendliness and helpfulness. Nothing was too much trouble -- in fact, quite the contrary, as all the crew went out of their way to be helpful in any way possible. Our Tour Guide was very good; we greatly enjoy walking, and this was catered for brilliantly. Cuisine was outstanding, and Chef Rhiad was as good as any you would find in the restaurants of the world. Truly a highlight! Our cabin was terrific and exactly what we had hoped for, with all necessary amenities, in great order, clean, comfortable, and everything working perfectly. Barge Lady services were terrific. Pre-trip information was extremely informative and covered everything we needed. We had a thoroughly enjoyable experience which we would recommend to anyone, and we were 100% happy...Thank you!"

- John Pearson, cruised July, 2015

"The crew was delightful. We really enjoyed everyone. Of course, Captain/barge owner Olivier was great. What I really liked about Olivier is that he had a great sense of humor and he understood kidding and played along. It was so nice to have a Hostess, June, who was more mature -- vibrant, but not a kid. She was also a fount of health and beauty information some of which I plan to use promptly. She went out of her way to accommodate my husband who was having real GI issues and I so appreciate that. We loved her. Chef Valerie was so sweet -- she showed us how to make her salad dressing. Our Tour Guide, Marie Ellen, was wonderful and full of knowledge and enthusiasm for the area. We can't say enough good things about the crew! There was nothing that I didn't enjoy about the sightseeing -- what fascinating history! My favorite place was Minerve. The barge trip was incredibly relaxing with wonderful food, wine, and great service. It was fun to have a hot tub and we used it. The information that The Barge Lady sent was complete and really answered all our questions. I can't think of anything more you could have added. A+ for that!”

- Claudia Arthur, cruised May, 2014

"Our experience on Alegria was wonderful. Olivier was a welcoming host and made us feel very much at home. He took very good care of our family. When we explained to him that our daughters (aged 12 and 14) were French immersion students and that we wanted to encourage them to use their French, Olivier very kindly spoke to them extensively in French, and encouraged them into speaking more and better French. We really appreciated his patience and kindness with our girls. The food prepared onboard by our Chef, Amandine was exquisite, with fresh ingredients, and beautifully prepared and presented meals. The service provided by our Hostess, Christie, was first rate. The accomodations onboard were very nice and suited our family very well. The configuration of two adjacent bedrooms and bathrooms was very user-friendly and the salon and breakfast nook were well appointed and very nice. We really enjoyed the day tours to Carcasonne, Minerve, and Narbonne provided by our Tour Guide, Aurore. She was pleasant, informative, and very accomodating to our family. Overall, we would highly recommend Alegria to others as a wonderful travel experience."

- Jeff Lee, cruised July, 2013

"We thoroughly enjoyed the excursions and looked forward to them each day. Our Tour Guide, Aurore, was very knowledgeable and we were very happy with every place we visited. It was very exciting going through the locks. It was also relaxing sitting up on deck and we loved the pace and being able to see the lovely scenery at leisure. The cabins were a good size and plenty of room for storage. The mini- bar was an appreciated addition. The Bage Lady servces were organized extremely well."
