Apres Tout

After Captain Rory and Chef Caroline Macrae, pictured at right, are the most accomplished couple in barging.  After working in the industry for over 20 years, this incredible couple finally bought their own barge to operate, and aptly named it "Apres Tout" (menaing "after all").  Rory and Caroline started out as crew on various barges, and eventually began managing them.  They were professional, but with an infectious style that captured both the passengers they served and the crew they led.  On Apres Tout , they will be able to showcase many original ideas which we believe will elevate the barging experience.

The differences begin first with the daily escursions.  Rory believes in introducing not just to sights, but the interesting personalities of the region. He calls it his “Private Access” program. So…there is a lunch in a winery overlooking the fields and a meeting with the vineyard owner. Drop in to an artist's studio. Drive through the vines of the Cote d’Or in World War II era jeeps! Visit a truffle farm. Join the locals at Market in Dijon. Indulge in a “Invitation only” winetasting in Beaune. This is in addition to the usual top sightseeing, which includes the immaculately preserved Medieval hospital in Beaune, the Cathedral in Dijon, and the adorable chateau village of Chateauneuf-en-Auxois, perched high over the canal.

Caroline and Rory also invite guests into their personal work areas, the wheelhouse and the galley. From behind the steering wheel, Rory will share his knowledge of the canals and rivers while guests sit on comfortable seating and watch amazing scenery drift by. Those interested in cuisine can join Caroline in her elegant kitchen. Sip a glass of wine while Caroline shares recipes and techniques. There is always a way to be personally involved on Après Tout.

Caroline’s cuisine is light and delicious, emphasizing local ingredients. Please see the menu section for a picture of her elegant kitchen and a sample lunch and dinner. When I am aboard, Caroline always serves my favorite lunch entrée, Coronation Chicken! Be sure to ask for it.

The differences also carry over into their phycial plant, which has been created with simple luxury in the details: Lots of space. Windows that open. Satellite TV in the salon. Hot tub on deck that accommodates everyone at the same time. Dual 110-220 volt outlets in the bath. The décor is not elaborate, but it is comfortable and soothing. The three identical staterooms offer a choice of King or Twin beds, while in the bathrooms are every amenity needed. The interior is enhanced by pale oak flooring.

Outside, the deck, pictured below, runs the full length of the barge and is designed for many uses: dining, lounging and spa. For those who prefer shade, a large canopy can be provided.
The lengthy canal-only route is gorgeous and provides daily opportunities to walk on the towpath or explore by bicycle. Many other interests can be accommodated in this region, including hot air ballooning and golf on several courses.

Rory and Caroline say: “There is no better way to explore the splendor of France than to gently cruise along the canals and rivers. This cruise is designed for guests who appreciate attention to detail, as well as gourmet meals and fabulous wines. Whatever your interests are – winetasting, history, cuisine, bicycling, shopping, golfing, art, antiques – we will create a cruise especially for you.” Be among the first to cruise with this delightful couple!

sample cruise week on Burgundy barge Apres Tout

Apres Tout Guest Book

"Our week in Southern Burgundy aboard the Apres Tout far exceeded our expectations. The accommodations were superb. Unlike ocean cruise ships, the cabin were extremely spacious, as was the bathroom, which featured a large shower. Chef Caroline prepared delightful meals inspired by traditional French cuisine. She is a graduate of the famous Cordon Bleu school of cooking. Glen, the Tour Guide, was amazing. He explained in detail each wine served to include how the soil affected the grapes and how the slope of the land was important along with many other factors. Hostess Hannah was the cheese expert. Each night she described the various cheeses and how they were made and which animals provided the milk - cows, goats, etc. From our first pick up in Paris to our final departure, everything was stellar."

- Walter C. Slack, cruised July, 2016

"One of the best vacations ever! The crew aboard the Apres Tout could not have been more accommodating. We enjoyed talking with each of them and listening to their stories. We enjoyed all the excursions, especially exploring Dijon and the Hospice In Beaune. Cabins were excellent and tidied daily. Barge Lady services were very professional and helpful, and all pre-trip information was clear and comprehensive."

- Mary Davis, cruised June, 2016

"All of the crew about the Apres Tour were fun to cruise with. They accommodated anything we asked for, always making sure that our needs were met, and that we were having a great time. It's clear that Captain Rory and Chef Caroline want to make sure that their guests are well taken care of. Rory is always making sure that everything on the barge is clean, painted, and in top working order -– he never sits around         (except when he is steering with his feet...!) and is always keeping his 'baby' looking better than any other vessel on the canal. Very good food and appropriate portions – we ate and drank a lot but didn’t gain any weight. Tour Guide Glen gave us a thorough historical perspective about the places we visited while on our excursions. The cabin exceeded our expectations. Extra luggage storage was provided down the hall. Hostess Hannah did an over the top job in keeping things organized. Working with the Barge Lady was easy, as you have the experience to know the answer to questions and the contacts to make things happen. You were on top of things and responded to all of our questions and requests. We feel fortunate to have chosen you to book our trip out of all of the other opportunities we had."

- Larry Bullock, cruised May, 2016

"Alice and I want to thank you for a terrific week of cruising, sightseeing, and wonderful hospitality on the Burgundy Canal. Captain Rory's mastery of maneuvering the barge is astounding and his personality overflows with very good vibrations. He is justly deserving of the title 'King of the Canal'. Chef Caroline welcomed us with open arms. The food she created and served us was spectacular. Tour Guide Glen guided us through the countryside and taught us a great deal about wine and French history. His knowledge is remarkable and his care for us was greatly appreciated. Hostess Hannah made sure we wanted for nothing, and was attentive to our every need. In short, we had a wonderful time. The barge, the accommodations, the food, the wine, the service, and the excursions all exceeded our expectations. The highest accolade that we can give you is that we now consider the crew of the Apres Tout our friends."

- Alice and Chuck Legarde, cruised May, 2016

Picture a Barge Cruise on Aprés Tout

sample cruise week on Burgundy barge Apres Tout
