C'est la Vie

Barge Lady Sales Manager Lori Young visited C'est la Vie In late July, 2013.

"It was my pleasure to visit again with Olivier and Deb Megret on their elegant 8-passenger barge in the green deep countryside of northern Burgundy. C'est la Vie is richly appointed and decorated with original and regional art, and with gorgeous Gien pottery vases that over flow with seasonal blooms (Lily's for my visit!). The barge was spotless as always, the rich wood emanating a golden glow. A new coffee table and a lovely artist rendering of the barge were refreshing touches. Deb has undertaken an upholstery course and each cabin is adorned with an antique piece. I spent several hours with their darling crew over aperitifs and dinner; guide Glenn, an old friend and one of the best guides ever! - chef Joe, an interesting Englishman with years of experience in restaurants, predominately in the French Alps. Mid-stream in his first season he has fallen in love with the intimacy of the barge kitchen and adores the opportunity to be creative, 2013 feedback consistently included a nod towards his cuisine. Hostess Isabel is a veteran on the waterways having worked on barges for some 20 years, charming woman, quiet but very witty! Can't wait to visit again and again and again..."

C'EST LA VIE is owned and operated by Olivier and Deb Megret, a remarkable Barge C'est la Vie ownerscouple, pictured at right, with deep roots in the barge industry and a reservoir of talent that will assure C'est La Vie as a top, top quality operation! Olivier and Deb have worked for distinguished barge operators in a variety of roles; chef, captain, guide and hostess. In addition, Olivier is a certified balloon pilot and enjoys wine as a hobby. Their longstanding dream of owning their own vessel has come to fruition with C'est La Vie, the former Lone Star. Olivier knows the barge and the route well having served as captain to previous owners for many years.

Olivier hails from one of France’s top “barging families,” the Megret clan. “For the past 25 years, I have enjoyed life on the barges, having the pleasure of showing my country to our wonderful passengers,” he says. Deb is British and started in the narrow boat industry there, eventually moving to France and working for top companies. It was on one of these vessels that she met Olivier. They were married in 2006.

C'est La Vie was designed as a private floating getaway for an American family and as a result, “feels” very welcoming! The window-lined salon-dining room is really a place to relax and watch the world go by! Décor is in warm shades of blue and cream, while the furniture is of the comfortable variety. Colorful table settings both in the dining room and on deck reflect the warmth and fun of C'est La Vie. The four extremely spacious cabins are paneled in ash and cherry wood and offer such amenities as individually controlled heating/air conditioning units, 110 AND 220 volt electricity in the bedroom and bath, and ample storage space. The en-suite baths have a full-size standing shower and enough counter space that you will be reminded of home.

With a glass of champagne to welcome you, and after introductions to the crew, you have time to settle into your spacious cabins before your first gourmet dinner aboard.

Monday: Cruise to Beaulieu
Sightseeing in Sancerre
On our way, this morning we cruise to the village of Beaulieu, after lunch we take a short drive through the vineyards to visit to the fortified town of Sancerre, where you will have a private wine tasting of this famous Sauvignon Blanc. This hill top medieval site gives you panoramic views over the Loire River and of the neighbouring vineyards of Pouilly Fumé. Return to the “C’est la Vie” for dinner.

Tuesday: Cruise to Ouzouer sur Trézée
Sightseeing Chateau of St Fargeau
This morning’s cruise takes us to the town of Ouzouer sur Trézée, crossing over the Loire River at Briare on the “Pont Canal”, this aqueduct was designed by Gustave Eiffel, construction of the canal bridge started in 1890. The Château of St Fargeau, pictured above, is this afternoon’s destination, dating from the 10th century; it was built by the bishop of Auxerre and has undergone many additions and restorations over the following years. Returning on board in time for cocktails and dinner.

Wednesday: Cruise to Rogny -les-Sept-Ecluses
Sightseeing Faiencerie of Gien, Dinner ashore today
From Ouzouer sur Trézée we drive to the town of Gien, the world famous centre for French table ware. Back on board for lunch and an afternoon cruise to the town of Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses. C'est la Vie Guest Book

girls cruise trip in france on hotel barge C'est la Vie

"We had, and always have, a fabulous time on the C'est La Vie, as it is the perfect barge with the greatest crew. We have become very close personally to owners Deb and Olivier, and we hope to return in 2018 for a fourth cruise."

- Suzanne and Ed Kristensen, cruised August, 2016 (repeat Barge Lady guest)

"The Megrets and their crew are simply first rate. Captain Olivier and Tour Guide Deb always select Hostesses and Chefs who meet their high standards. We loved every dish by Chef Corrine. The excursions to the Napoleon museum and the Pope’s quarters gave significance to a period of European history. Cabins were as nice as my bedroom at home, and better than any hotel we visited. Barge Lady services were most helpful, especially the timely reminders for insurance and travel documents, as I did not realize some countries will not accept passports that expire within six months. As usual, an unparalleled experience while aboard the C'est La Vie."

- Carl Spangler, cruised August, 2016 (repeat Barge Lady guest)

“We are having the time of our lives!”

- Girls Getaway Cruise of Bobbii, Carolyn, Diane, Katina, Patty, Claire and Amy, June 2016

"Amazing crew! We have rented diverse yachts and all types of embarkations in the past, but this was one of not THE best crew we ever had. We were delighted with the quality of the service provided on the barge. The cuisine was very, very good and we were pleased to see how accommodating the crew was with our specific need and requests. Two members of the family are vegetarian and one is a vegan. At no point were we made to feel that our choices were complicating the planning of the meals. Everyone was extremely respectful of our diet restrictions. Cabins were excellent -- vast and spacious! Everything was crystal clear and the pre-trip packages we received were detailed and complete. We also much appreciated the maps of the area that were provided. This allowed us to familiarize ourselves with the region. As the person who took care of the booking, I rarely meet such caring and patient booking agents. It was an absolute pleasure to retain your services and I will DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THE BARGE LADY to everyone interested in a canal cruise."

- M.C., cruised June, 2016

"Our time on the C'est La Vie was more than we anticipated. The food was fabulous, accommodations were first class, and service was over the top. The itinerary took us to small villages that gave us a glimpse of the real French countryside. Thanks to the great weather we enjoyed an unforgettable week riding bikes and walking through the gorgeous spring green scenery. Owners Olivier and Deb do an outstanding job of making sure your every need is met."
