As Ellen’s daughter, Caroline AKA “La Petite Barge Lady” has been exposed to the barge industry her whole life, and remembers many dinner table conversations about barging and travel. In 2010, Caroline Sack Klein finally joined forces with Ellen, bringing with her nearly 10 years of sales and marketing experience.
After several visits to France, Caroline quickly became Ellen’s protégé. She has met (and charmed) many barge owners, and here she is in Burgundy, center, with Spencer and Rejane Hayes, the team behind top barges Prosperite and Rendez-Vous. On the Canal du Midi, Kelly (at left) and Caroline (at right) visited the lovely barge Esperance with owner Mathias Gilles. She also has an interest in discovering new and wonderful Paris hotels for us to recommend to our guests.
Caroline has loved learning the business from Ellen, the world’s top barging expert, and Conde Naste Travel Specialist, and her innate passion for barging is no surprise. Here below is Ellen, far left, and Caroline, far right, on the Canal du Midi and on the deck of Emma with owners Rene and Liz.
When not at work, Caroline spends time with her husband and children. Her daughter, Maya, AKA “The Barge Baby”, was born March 19, 2013. The newest member of the Barge Lady family, Nate, Caroline’s son and our “Barge Lad”, arrived on October 23, 2015! Caroline is also extremely interested in fitness and yoga.
As Caroline is a Type 1 Diabetic, the entire family has been extremely involved in supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) the world’s largest private funder of diabetes research. Over the years, a significant amount of money was raised by auctioning cruises donated by our friends in the barging world. We are grateful to be able to be part of the effort to cure diabetes.
Fun fact - Caroline travels everywhere (regardless of the trip duration) with one carry-on, and now Ellen and Stephanie do the same whenever possible!
Caroline says: "As a protégé of The Barge Lady herself, I try to find a way to make suggestions that will improve our guest’s experience. Whether it is introducing guests to certain barges based on their wish list, or sharing my hotel idea, I want to add value with every interaction."

Dear Caroline and Ellen (a.k.a. Les Barge Ladies) Thank you so much for your attentive and professional care and support in planning our first barge trip.
You have been an absolute pleasure to work with, and I've been spreading the word.
Your thoughtful gift is above and beyond and most appreciated. And it's the kind of gift that keeps on giving--we will most certainly be fondly thinking of you as we enjoy several of the restaurants highlighted in that delicious time!
"The fantastic ladies at The Barge Lady know the Burgundy Canal and her barges well.
They can and assuredly will point you in the right direction for the barge cruise of your dreams."
