Enchante

Enchante is the most spacious and modern barge on the Canal du Midi, which provides quite a nice contrast to this ancient waterway – completed in the 16th century! This barge brings a host of 21st century amenities – such a large hot tub on deck, open kitchen, spacious cabins and window-lined salon. Cruising in contemporary comfort, which experiencing classic charm – this is the lure of the Enchante.

The Canal du Midi was an engineering marvel in its time. Completed in 1691, it links the Mediterranean with the Atlantic, winding its way through adorable villages, forested countryside and vineyards. Visitors today can enjoy similar scenery and ambiance in this “land that time forgot.” Sightseeing includes the medieval cite of Carcassonne, markets, vineyards, olive oil tasting, Roman sites: A historic region best seen from the canal.

Enchante, one of the few two-story barges on the Canal du Midi, is the “brainchild” of Roger and Louisa Gronow. Roger, who is French, and Louisa, who is British, met some 20 years ago when they were fellow crew on a barge in Burgundy. With their deep background in hospitality, this couple knew not only how to incorporate the best features of barging, but also to add their own ideas. The open kitchen, for instance, allows guests to watch and learn from the chef, while outside on deck, the especially large hot tub is a welcome feature on sunny days! Cabins are the size of hotel rooms; bathrooms modern with full size shower. A crew of five, especially chosen and trained by Louisa, provides excellent service.

We have successfully welcomed families and private couple groups to Enchante – and look forward to returning ourselves very soon!

"Director of Operations" Caroline Sack Klein says, "Enchante is a modern and contemporary barge with lots of character and energy. Owners Roger and Louisa each have 15 years experience working as crew members on various barges, and as a result, they have built a functional, spacious, and gorgeous vessel. Despite their relative youth, Roger and Louisa certainly know how to run a top operation. Enchante certainly lives up to its name!"

Enchante Guest Book

guests on hotel barge enchante Languedoc"The Enchante was the perfect fit for our group. Crew was charming, competent, eager to please, and all either native English speakers or fluent in English. Cuisine was excellent! Our Chef, Sylvan, a native of Dijon, prepared imaginative meals, meticulously presented, and welcomed interested observers while preparing them. Excursions were interesting, and well presented by Matthew, our Tour Guide. We especially enjoyed the wine tasting. Cabins were excellent, no complaints whatsoever, and exactly as represented in the cabin layout plan on your website. Many thanks to Barge Lady Lori for arranging our travel details so well."

- John G., cruised April, 2016

"We could not have been more pleased with the Enchante. The barge itself contemporary and stylish with the kitchen in full view of the passenger space. Very pretty and on first sight we were impressed. The crew was EXCEPTIONAL. They were all very personable and happy and gave us every consideration and wonderful service. Cuisine was superb. Sylvan, the Chef, became our personal chef. And we consider ourselves foodies, as we live in California wine country and believe we eat well! This is how the cuisine should be. The cabin was large and well appointed, with a huge amount of storage, and the bath was large, very new, and clean. All the emails and other communications from the Barge Lady were wonderful, friendly, complete, and accurate. Keep doing what you are doing!"

- MaryAnn and Jim Kerschner, cruised August, 2015

"Everything was wonderful! We had a glorious time and the Enchante was delightful in every way. The crew was outstanding and the food just made us groan with pleasure every time we tasted a new dish. So did the wine. We keep coming back to book more barge cruises with the Barge Lady, so you can tell that we like the experience! Merci beaucoup to you all again for a job well done."

- Lindy Wisdom, cruised June, 2015 (repeat Barge Lady guest)

"We had a fantastic time! The cabins were much larger than we expected which was great. The crew was terrific and wonderfully attentive. Anthony was a great guide, and had lots of adventures in his past life so it was fun to swap stories. Sylvan, the chef was amazing. The food truly was a highlight. Hostess Sheryl got us whatever we needed, and was the hardest working one of the bunch. Captain Elie was charming and got that barge through the tightest of spots. Overall, we had a lovely time, and relaxed in a way we haven't in a very long time. Thanks for all of your help and advice."
