Finesse

Introducing Finesse! A brand new barge in Burgundy from Roger and Louisa Grownow, well known to us as owners of the Enchante on the Canal du Midi. Like its predecessor, Finesse is exceptionally light and open to the outside – from the panoramic windows in the salon/dining area to the large cabins, each with several portholes. Finesse guests will feel part of the passing scene. The interior is designed as a contemporary albeit floating vacation home. Enjoy watching the chef in the open kitchen, while out on deck, laze and sip Champagne in the large and up-to-date hot tub. This is the life!

The salon/dining room features black leather sofas and fabric-covered armchairs – arranged on oak flooring. A computer is available for guest’s use. The dining room table adjoins the open kitchen.

The four identical cabins at 265 square feet are among the largest on the French canals. King size beds, double sink and a standard size walk-in shower create a comfortable ambiance.

The route introduces five days on the Canal du Centre and one day on the River Saone. The route, which we call “Brilliant Burgundy,” is located between Dijon at the northern end and St Julien -sur-Dheune at the southern end and meanders from village to village. Paved towpath means very easy walking and biking. The excursions are planned for a mix of experiences: From a family owned chateau…to wine tasting…Roman ruins….shopping and sightseeing in the larger towns of Dijon and Beaune….mooring at canal side villages.

Finesse – “Brilliant Burgundy” Barge Cruise

St-Julien-sur-Dheune to St-Jean-de-Losne on the Canal du Centre and River Saone

From the Romans…to Medieval cathedral builders…to wine makers….to family owned chateaux…to enchanting villages: This cruise combines history, culture, and wonderful floating. Enjoy “Brilliant Burgundy” on the barge Finesse!

Sunday, Day 1: Dijon to St-Julien-sur-Dheune
Chauffeured Transfer from Dijon to Finesse
Finesse crew will meet you in Dijon, France – either in the Dijon Ville Train Station at 4:00 pm or the lobby of the Grand Hotel La Cloche Dijon MGallery by Sofitel at 4:15 pm (The cost of transfers to/from Dijon is in addition to the cruise fare and must be booked separately.) Guests are then transferred by air-conditioned minibus to Finesse, moored in the canal side village of St. Julien-sur-Dheune. You are now in Burgundy, known as the “land of good living.” Your cruise begins with the traditional Champagne Welcome and introduction of crew. Then there is time to wander along the towpath and admire the classic Burgundy scenery before dinner on board.

Monday, Day 2 St-Julien-sur-Dheune to St-Léger-sur-Dheune
Ducal Palace Dating from the 14th Century
This morning, we begin our voyage through Southern Burgundy along the Canal du Centre through undulating countryside to moor at the little village of St-Leger-sur-Dheune. Along the way, we’ll descend a series of locks with plenty of opportunities to disembark and explore passing villages. Or, relax on deck and watch the passing scenery. After lunch on board, your guide drives to the nearby 14th century Château de Germolles, the best preserved of the residences of the Dukes of Burgundy, with its ducal chapel, medieval wall paintings and romantic gardens. This is living history as well, since the chateau has been owned by the same family for several generations and is still being renovated. Dinner on board.

Tuesday, Day 3 St-Léger-sur-Dheune to Remigny
Autun: Roman Ruins and Important Medieval Cathedral
This morning, we head to Autun, a town first settled by the Romans in the 1st century AD. It’s importance is exemplified by the two remaining Roman gates and 17,000 seat amphitheatre, the largest amphitheatre of its time. Moving forward to the Medieval period, the 12th century cathedral is renowned for its architectural sculptures and its position on the pilgrims’ route from Vezelay to Santiago de Compestela in Spain. We return to the barge for lunch, then we cruise to the rural setting of Remigny, passing along the route the famous wine-producing village of Santenay. Dinner on board.

Wednesday, Day 4 Remigny to Rully
Ancient Hospital in Enchanting Beaune – Plus Michelin-Starred Lunch!
After breakfast, drive through the Côte de Beaune vineyards to the town of Beaune, capital of Burgundy wine country. Millions of bottles of wine are stored under its cobblestoned streets. First we’ll tour the immaculately preserved Hôtel-Dieu Hospice, built by a wealthy wine merchant in the 15th century and still in use as a hospital until right before World War I. There is time to look into the quaint shops in the pedestrian shopping zone before departing Beaune for lunch at Michelin-starred restaurant Le Montrachet. Then return to Finesse for an afternoon cruise to our mooring near the village of Rully. If weather permits, relax in the hot tub as charming wine villages float by. Dinner on board.

Thursday, Day 5 Rully to Fragnes
Wine Tasting at a Family Owned Chateau
This morning, we continue our cruise along the Canal du Centre at a leisurely pace to moor at the village of Fragnes. There are perfect opportunities to walk or cycle along the towpath en route. In the afternoon we escort you on a winery tour and private tasting to the delightful 17th century Château de Chamirey in Mercurey, owned by the Devillard family for five generations. Dinner on board.

Friday, Day 6 Fragnes to St-Jean-de-Losne
Delightful Dijon – home of Mustard and Gourmet Delights!
This morning, the barge leaves the winding canal to join the peaceful River Saône, passing delightful little ports such as Seurre and Verdun-sur-le-Doubs en route to St-Jean-de-Losne. St. Jean de Losne is the most important river port in France, with over 350 moorings. After lunch on board, we take a walking tour of old Dijon, gastronomic capital of France with its mustard shops and covered market designed by Eiffel of Tower fame. We’ll also visit to the impressive Notre-Dame de Dijon. Enjoy some excellent shopping time, too. Return to Finesse for your Farewell Dinner. Review nostalgic memories of your cruise and accept a toast from the crew.

Saturday, Day 7 St-Jean-de-Losne to Dijon
A Sad Farewell
After breakfast, you will be chauffeured back to Dijon, either at Dijon Ville Train Station or the lobby of the Grand Hotel La Cloche Dijon MGallery by Sofitel. Estimated arrival time is between 10:00 - 10:30 am.  Please make all onward travel plans on the basis of this timing and these announced drop off locations. Finesse Guest Book

Here is guest feedback from Enchante on the Canal du Midi and the sister ship of Finesse:

"The Enchante was the perfect fit for our group. Crew was charming, competent, eager to please, and all either native English speakers or fluent in English. Cuisine was excellent! Our Chef, Sylvan, a native of Dijon, prepared imaginative meals, meticulously presented, and welcomed interested observers while preparing them. Excursions were interesting, and well presented by Matthew, our Tour Guide. We especially enjoyed the wine tasting. Cabins were excellent, no complaints whatsoever, and exactly as represented in the cabin layout plan on your website. Many thanks to Barge Lady Lori for arranging our travel details so well."

- John G., cruised April, 2016

"We could not have been more pleased with the Enchante. The barge itself contemporary and stylish with the kitchen in full view of the passenger space. Very pretty and on first sight we were impressed. The crew was EXCEPTIONAL. They were all very personable and happy and gave us every consideration and wonderful service. Cuisine was superb. Sylvan, the Chef, became our personal chef. And we consider ourselves foodies, as we live in California wine country and believe we eat well! This is how the cuisine should be. The cabin was large and well appointed, with a huge amount of storage, and the bath was large, very new, and clean. All the emails and other communications from the Barge Lady were wonderful, friendly, complete, and accurate. Keep doing what you are doing!"

- MaryAnn and Jim Kerschner, cruised August, 2015

"Everything was wonderful! We had a glorious time and the Enchante was delightful in every way. The crew was outstanding and the food just made us groan with pleasure every time we tasted a new dish. So did the wine. We keep coming back to book more barge cruises with the Barge Lady, so you can tell that we like the experience! Merci beaucoup to you all again for a job well done."

- Lindy Wisdom, cruised June, 2015 (repeat Barge Lady guest)
