Barging in Gascony
Barging in Gascony! This ancient area of idyllic waterways, fortified towns and classic local lifestyle is the perfect barging destination!
Gascony lies deep in the untouched French countryside in an area where time seems to have stood still. Yet it is very accessible via Toulouse: TGV (fast) trains from downtown Paris and several daily flights from Paris Orly. The town of Montauban is also reached by the TGV. Barge cruising in Gascony can be easily combined with several days in the adjacent Bordeaux region.
The Canal de Garonne and the Rivers Garonne and Tarn
You’ve “done” some of the major regions and are looking for something new and beguiling! This is a land of artisans, local festivals and markets, well-preserved towns - and few tourists. There are so many lovely ports, making the barge experience very special.
Medieval bastide (fortified) villages. The Montech Water Slope, which allows the barge to bypass five locks. Shop for Armagnac liqueur and local ingredients of foie gras, duck and walnuts. The collection of Goya masterpieces in the Fine Arts Museum of Agen.
Saint Louis is the only barge that cruises in Gascony. Its owners live along the route and will introduce local lifestyle.
