Grand Victoria

Barge Ladies Ellen and Stephanie visited the Grand Victoria in April of 2016, celebrating Stephanie's birthday while aboard! We had a great time with the Grand Victoria’s owner, Edward (Ed) Anderson, seen here pouring wine at lunch, and we came home very enthusiastic about this innovative new barge.

The Grand Victoria has been meticulously designed for the modern adventurer looking to cruise in luxury. Owner-operators Edward Anderson and Cindy Unvericht represent a new generation in barging, bringing international experience and a fresh approach to the French canals. Ed grew up in South Africa, which naturally led to his involvement in the upscale safari industry. His background also includes competitive skydiving, sports marketing, and golfing. Cindy is from in New York, and provides extensive experience in entrepreneurship, specialty retail, and event production. Both of them share passions for cooking and travel which is evident in the Grand Victoria's commitment to contemporary culture and Continental cuisine.

Most intriguingly, Ed and Cindy's vision encompasses a guided introduction to their favorite people and places in Burgundy. Having served as barge crew together, they are intimate with the hidden gems and local treasures throughout the area. Eschewing the typical sightseeing found on other barges, guests aboard the Grand Victoria enjoy personalized itineraries created from a selection of unique events and “off-the-beaten-path” discoveries. A gastronomic lunch at a charming bistro, going ashore for a moonlit tour of "Dijon by Night", pictured below, are just some of the Grand Victoria's signature activities from which guests can choose. Of course, no one visits Southern Burgundy without sampling the region's world-famous wines! Private tours and special tastings are offered at a number of vineyards both well-known and emerging, with many pairings of area wineries generously poured with lunch and dinner.

Back on board, the Grand Victoria boasts a state-of-the-art physical plant while an intrepid crew attends to every need, including daily laundry service, a rarity on barge cruises. Three spacious cabins, each named after key Grand Victoria locales of Paris, Pamplona, and Havana, are havens of comfort. Flat screen televisions are provided for guests to stream from a network of movies, television shows, while the newly updated ensuite baths feature double sinks. Guests can unwind in the vessel's recently redecorated salon while listening to music from the boat's vintage vinyl collection, a glass in hand courtesy of the vessel's extensive wine cellar. "Foodies" are invited to join their private Chef in the open kitchen while he crafts seasonally-inspired meals with market-fresh ingredients. Evening cocktails are presented from the boat's exclusive beverage menu, while the deck seating -- and hot tub! -- invite further socializing and relaxing. Even the smallest of luxuries have been thoughtfully realized; premium coffee service is available at all times, while fresh flowers and decorative accents add delightful ambiance.

Recent Barge Lady guests have given Grand Victoria glowing reviews, and we anticipate many more to come. The Barge Ladies agree that Grand Victoria provides an indelibly memorable experience along the canals of Southern Burgundy, and we recommend it for active groups of six with much confidence!

Grand Victoria Guest Book

"Of the three barge cruises we've taken with the Barge Lady, we liked this one the best. The crew was superb. All very friendly and helpful. Owner and Tour Guide Edward was so well informed and educated on the area, and all the tours were excellent. We loved the visit to Dijon, which was varied in its sights, and offered a good winetasting. We also decided to opt out of one of the excursions, because we loved just staying onboard and relaxing. We can't get over how superb the cuisine was. Ryan, the Chef, prepared the best meals we have enjoyed on a barge cruise -- his menus would qualify for at least a Michelin 1-star. Adding to the superior cuisine was the table service by Hostess Kat, which was impeccable. All the cabins were lovely. Bathroom with double sinks and good-sized shower. Linens and towels extremely fine, and beds very comfortable. Services from the Barge Lady provided all the pre-trip information we needed."

- Tom Lloyd, cruised September, 2016 (repeat Barge Lady client)

"I had heard from friends how much they enjoyed their barge cruises, but I have to say this one exceeded my expectations. I so enjoyed the care, privacy, and relaxing pace of the trip...I could have stayed for another week!

I cannot say enough good things about the owners Edward and Cindy, along with their crew Chef Ryan, Hostess Kat, Pilot Pascal, and Deckhand Alex. They welcomed us warmly and were always available to accommodate our needs. Edward and Cindy are wonderful hosts and our daily sightseeing trips with Edward were fun and informative. I learned so much about the region, the wine, the food, and the people. I think the pace Edward set was perfect for us. We saw a variety of things. We so enjoyed the cheese tasting and our visit to the wine cellar in Beaune. Beaune’s hospital museum was most interesting to me. Edward also chose lunch spots where we were able to enjoy the local specialties.

Chef Ryan's cuisine was absolutely DELICIOUS. Every meal was served so beautifully. Portions were perfect and the variety of each menu was much appreciated. Ryan’s knowledge of the local foods was great, and he graciously shared this with us. Edward chose some excellent wine pairings based on our preferences. Going through the locks was a special experience and Pascal accomplished this with his knowledge and steady manner. I have to give a special thanks to Cindy and Edward’s son Alex who was always there to help me on and off the vessel.

My king-bedded cabin was wonderful. The bathroom was so well designed. I loved the shower, and the shampoo and conditioner in the dispensers. Lighting was good too for reading, and the closet was the perfect size. The vessel's salon is cheerful and spacious and the sitting area most comfortable, as is the dining area. Pre-trip information was all very helpful and much appreciated. I think you all have managed to offer a splendid way of travel. Thank you."

- Connie McHugh, cruised September, 2016

"I’m pleased to report that our barge cruise on the Grand Victoria far exceeded our expectations. The crew on board could not have been better. Owners Edward and Cindy were the perfect hosts -- friendly, warm, and caring, and Hostess Christina was a real gem.

Luke, the Chef, was talented and charming. I was quite skeptical of the quality of the food on any barge and wanted to plan more meals in town. I’m so glad Barge Lady Ellen talked me into keeping the schedule of meals on the barge because the cuisine was excellent! The quality of the food, the presentation, and the menus were all wonderful. The table settings were even beautiful and varied every day. We also had high expectations about the quality and selection of wine pairings on board, and again, Edward and Cindy exceeded our expectations. The accommodations were also very comfortable, and even my 6’5” foot husband did not feel cramped. The showers were a real plus -- so well designed and hot water on demand!

We were also very pleased with your services and will certainly recommend the Barge Lady to our friends. Edward and Cindy also spoke so highly of all of you, and it’s clear that our comfort and the success of this trip was a team effort between you and the barge owners. Thank you for recommending the Grand Victoria and all your work to prepare for the trip. It was a fabulous vacation for us all!"

- LeAnn Pope, cruised June, 2016

We had a fabulous vacation with our friends aboard the Grand Victoria. We enjoyed every minute of the cruise and felt accommodated whenever we had a request. France was looking particulary green, and we enjoyed sailing and sightseeing in the sunshine. But what made the trip all the more enjoyable were our convivial and accommodating hosts, Edward and Cindy. Edward was a superbly knowledgeable guide whether we were in the cellars of a winery or seeing the sights in Beaune or Dijon.

Together, Cindy and Edward have created a distinctive modern vibe for The Hemmingway with their decor choices and sophisticated menus. Everything about this barge trip felt first class and yet delightfully unpretentious. We believe that the expectations for our trip were made very clear, that the focus for our group was on learning more about the wines of Burgundy and the beauty and history of the area. It was also made clear that high quality meals and accommodations were also important to us. Ultimately, this was a fabulous and memorable vacation experience on the Grand Victoria which the Barge Lady recommended to our group.

We can't say enough good things about owners Edward and Cindy. They are friendly, gracious, flexible, and accommodating. We enjoyed that all of our excursions were so well thought out and each of them was something we had on our itinerary and were looking forward to. Edward, who led the excursions, is an excellent and knowledgeable tour guide and a pleasure to be around. We all enjoyed walking or riding bikes in the morning before the excursions.

The food was fabulous. Exceeded our expectations. Chef Luke provided high-quality, inventive meals every night and delicious breakfasts and lunches as well. Edward made sure we had Burgundy wines which enhanced the meals. And our group was made up of well-traveled foodies with very high standards. We went to bed each night feeling delightedly well fed and pampered by our hosts and the crew.

It's hard to imagine a barge with nicer decor or accommodations. Everything on the barge from the fresh color scheme to the more contemporary furniture in the main cabin area and the comfy and lovely seating area on the deck exceeded our expectations. The cabin itself was nicely appointed with contemporary furniture and a large comfy king-size bed. The bathroom had double sinks, the shower was great -- always providing hot water with good water pressure.

As we stated up front, this trip on The Grand Victoria exceeded our very high expectations. Edward's broad experience in adventure travel makes him a very knowledgeable and interesting person to be around. His outgoing personality and flexibility made this trip a pleasure for all of us. As we were leaving we felt that Edward and Cindy had provided an extraordinarily wonderful experience for our little group and that they are professionals and people we could feel confident recommending to our our friends. Finally, Barge Lady's materials were excellent -- pre-trip information was helpful and very complete. Count on us to sing the praises of The Barge Lady."

- Susan and Ray Gillette, cruised June, 2016

"The barge experience aboard the Grand Victoria truly exceeded our expectations. The cabins were absolutely first class, the food extraordinarily well-prepared/presented, and the excursions were well-planned and customized to our interests.

The crew was experienced in high-end client service/hospitality.  The crew was friendly, all spoke English well, and they really cared about our experience.  Having owners Edward and Cindy onboard clearly demonstrated their commitment to our first-class trip.  We asked for wine-related activities and this was made the focus of our daily activities both on and off the barge.

The cuisine onboard were all Michelin-star quality. There were nice portions to each meal, no repeat meals and a good variety using fresh, local food.  Wines were carefully chosen to accompany the meals, all of the pairings of high-end quality, and there was a full cellar available for alternative selections.

The king-size bed and linens were new and very comfortable.  The cabin was quiet and very tastefully decorated.  The bathroom was well appointed with a nice shower with good water pressure. Clearly the Barge Lady is well connected to the barge owner/operator as all of our trip objectives and special requests were considered. We also appreciated the thorough and timely responses to our emails both pre/post booking as well as the Paris hotel recommendations."

Picture Your Barge Cruise on Grand Victoria

sample cruise week on France barge Absoluut2
