Hirondelle

Barge Lady Sales Manager Lori Young visited Hirondelle during the summer of 2013.
She says:

“I was excited to step on board Hirondelle, a Belmond (formerly known as Orient Express) owned barge, and sample their hospitality. My journey began with a finely tuned Paris chauffeured transfer to the barge, meeting the other passengers and sharing great conversation while we exited the Pairs suburbs and made our way deep into the Burgundian countryside. We arrived the barge in a steady drizzle, but the ever adorable crew had not a care in the world for the rain, they immediately swept us aboard and settled us in. If this welcome was any indication, I knew the coming days were going to be very special.

Having just remodeled their cabins (see below), with much anticipation I was delighted!
The rich and calming decor gave way to night after night of blissful sleep in delicious linens.

french barge Hirondelle remodeled cabin

The crew provided the top experience we have come to love from Belmond. Professional, friendly, and approachable. Each bringing to our days their interesting personalities. Captain Remi had a delft hand at the helm, absolutely marveling me with his maneuver through the extraordinary tunnel in Besancon. Matelot Nabil is a gem, always ready to help, always ready to be engaged. Chef Jon delighted us with his new approach to old favorites and that smile! Tour Guide Anne, having grown up in Burgundy in the barge business, she was a real asset with local knowledge, and our darling hostess Sophie. She quietly took control of our comfort and shared her bright enthusiastic charm throughout the day.”

Hirondelle’s cruise route is deep in the Franche-Comté countryside – paired with the top sights of Southern Burgundy. The cruising is divinely beautiful and the scenery is always changing. Float out of the mountains and through fields of haystacks dotted with Charolaise cattle, deep greens contrast the Burgundy woods to abundant vineyards and chateaux landscapes, scenery such as the Impressionists would have painted. At other times, the canal is tree-lined and you traverse from the river through the locks that bring Hirondelle back on to the canal. Lock houses bedecked with colorful gardens added much interest, while local children fish on the embankment. The canal towpath beckons guests to walk or bicycle at leisure. This well-operated vessel will appeal to many kinds of travelers. Hirondelle is suitable for four couples or a family looking for a private experience. On many sailings, parties of two will join other parties and have a great experience.

Hirondelle Burgundy Barge Cruise Itinerary

St Leger-sur-Dheune to Dole - The Best of Burgundy

Sunday: St Leger
Welcome Aboard!
You are chauffeured from your Paris hotel to Burgundy to board the barge in St Leger sur Dheune. A champagne reception welcomes you on board and gives you a chance to meet the crew. Later that evening enjoy your first dining experience on board.

Monday: Cruise to Chagny
Visit Château de Rully
A leisurely cruise on the Canal du Centre gives you a chance to savor the beauty of the French countryside, with plenty of opportunities at the many locks to get off the barge and walk or cycle along the splendid tow path. After lunch, your guide will take you to the pretty village of Rully to the 12th Century medieval fortress which has remained in the same family by marriage since its origin. The owner will guide you through his home sharing the intriguing history of his ancestors. Your visit is completed by a wonderful tasting of the wines produced by the de Ternay family in the 15th Century kitchen. Dinner this evening is on your barge.

Tuesday: Cruise to Fragnes
Visit Chateau de Chamirey
Relax on board while the barge cruises the final section of the Canal du Centre, mooring in the pretty village of Fragnes just before the last and very deep lock into the River Saône just north of Chalon-sur-Saône. After lunch enjoy a visit to the Château de Chamirey, a family run wine estate in Mercurey where a tour of the vineyards themselves will be followed by a guided visit of the property and wine cellar, and a tasting of the fine range of wines. Enjoy a very scenic drive back to the barge in time for cocktails and then a short drive to a charming local restaurant for dinner.

Wednesday: Cruise to Verdun sur le Doubs
Historic Beaune
A somewhat different cruising experience today, through the lovely valley of the River Saône to the town of Verdun. After lunch onboard we visit the charming old town of Beaune to see the famous Hotel-Dieu, a magnificent 15th century charity hospital, followed by a private wine tasting. There is time to stroll through the old town taking in the wonderful architecture and fine shopping. Tonight's mooring is at Verdun sur le Doubs, a vibrant little town just a few minutes’ walk from where the boat is tied up. Dinner this evening is on your barge.

Thursday: Cruise to St Jean de Losne
Visit Clos de Vougeot
This morning the barge continues the cruise upstream on the Saone River to St Jean de Losne, the barging capital of France. After a wonderful lunch on board we visit the historic Clos de Vougeot where the Cistercian monks first began making wine in the 12th century. The ancient chateau is now the headquarters of the celebrated Burgundian wine society the, Confrererie des chevaliers de tastevin, and contains the ancient cellar and wine presses from medieval times. After a local degustation rejoin the barge in St Jean, the overnight mooring. Dinner this evening is on your barge.

Friday: Cruise to Dole
Market Day in Dijon!
After breakfast, enjoy a walking tour of historic Dijon including a visit to the market, the famous Maille mustard shop and the Ducal Palace, seat of the great medieval dukes of Burgundy. There will be some free time for shopping, or perhaps sit in one of the numerous pavement cafés and simply watch the world go by. Return to the boat for lunch and the final cruise, leaving the Saone River and join the beautiful, windy Rhone Rhine Canal. Before dinner, your guide will accompany you for a walk around historic Dole, the birthplace of Louis Pasteur. Tonight, the barge moors in the port of Dole watching over the River Doubs. As the chef prepares for your Farewell gala dinner on board, perhaps try a 'Kir' aperitif; a cocktail which mixes the locally produced Cassis blackcurrant liqueur with the area's Aligoté white wine.

Saturday: St Leger sur Dheune
A Sad Farewell
After breakfast, you will be chauffeured to the designated drop off point in Paris. We hope to see you again!

Hirondelle Guest Book

"We were really spoiled by the boat's service, especially the cuisine. Very, very nice crew. All did an exceptional job. The Chef deserves a medal. Some of the best food I've ever had. Really excellent. Everything was well planned and communicated. Overall, a memorable experience, we would do it again...and plan to."

- Tom Jacobsmeyer, cruised May, 2016

"Dear Ellen and Caroline, we had a great time on the Hirondelle! We LOVED the barge, the crew, the food, the excursions -- AND the wines! Our group already wants to look into the Alsace-Lorraine barge cruise for next year. Thanks for all you do."

- Cyndy and Jake Jacobsmeyer, cruised May, 2016

"We had a wonderful time from start to finish, and couldn’t have been more impressed with every part of the experience. We were so impressed with the entire crew and their willingness to take care of every need and concern. The excursions were very informative and our Tour Guide was extremely knowledgeable. The cuisine and wine selections could not have been better. Juss, our Chef, has caused all of us to gain at least 10 pounds per person! I am happy to recommend this trip to my friends and family. Thanks again!"

- Tom Holz, cruised May, 2016

"We just got back last night from our fantastic 15-day trip to France. The best part was the barge cruise on the Hirondelle. The boat and the crew were fantastic. The crew was superb in every way and took care of our every need, always with a smile. Jonathan, the Captain, and the coordinator of everything, steered that ~128' vessel through what seemed like 100 lift locks with surgical precision. He would also help others if needed -- such as with a glass of champagne. Ivan, the First Mate, assisted in every way whenever and whatever was needed. He helped get the bikes off and on the boat, pumped up the tires, served drinks, and always with a smile. Hostess Leah (the house keeper, room cleaner, bed maker, meal server, drink maker, table setter, wine and cheese server), the 'Lady in Waiting Extraordinaire', was equally superb at her job(s), also always with a smile and beautiful New Zealand accent.

Jaime, the Scottish Chef, was also superb. He would come out before the various meals and calmly explain the details of the upcoming feast as if it were as easy as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Well it was about as far advanced from that as one could get. Each meal after breakfast was a 4- and 5-course masterpiece (breakfast could also be if desired), not only in taste but also presentation and all served with fine wines and other spirituous fluids generally from the region we were near. We enjoyed everything -- too much. Last and certainly not least was Claudio, the Italian born Tour Guide, Comedian, Historian, and Driver who spoke six languages and who took us on the various excursions to the vineyards, castles, villages, towns all the while giving us a history lesson on the area and the wines in it.

The cabin was as roomy as I expected. We had a good working air conditioner that put me to sleep every night. The beds were comfortable and with fresh clean everything every day. The shower was better than expected. I never heard anyone running out of hot water and the water pressure was great. I could go on and on about this trip. My only complaint is that it is over! We thoroughly enjoyed it. As stated on The Barge Lady website, Barging in Burgundy is wonderful. 'The Land of Good Living' sums it up nicely."

- Dr. Cam McLain, cruised August, 2015

"I will start by saying that the barge cruise was definitely one of if not the most enjoyable, memorable and relaxing trips we have ever done. Nothing can compare and it certainly was beyond our expectations. The crew was first class. Upon arrival boarding the barge we were greeted by these energetic, good-looking young people. They couldn't have been more welcoming. Our crew: Captain Jonathan, Chef Jamie, Hostesses Sophia and Becky, Matelot Ivan, and Tour Guide Claudio. They took care of us in extra-special ways and seemed to be happy to do so. For instance, being on deck early in the mornings and having coffee served to me (before breakfast). We felt like family after only one day.

We love France, l lived there and have visited several times. But it is always interesting to see the vilages and the people. We had never been to Dijon and Beaunne or the Burgundy regions. We also enjoyed seeing the Bugundy countryside, the vineyards and wine tastings. Claudio, the Tour Guide, was organized, knew the proprietors/reps which made the visits very personal as a group, and he made sure we had the best of wines aboard the Hirondelle. He always made sure we were aware of directions and meeting places in the towns we visited. He has worked in the tourist industry for some time, and is very knowledgeable.

Jamie, the Chef, is a very humble, talented, and creative chef. Each meal was special and walways waited in anticipation to see what he prepared for us. He worked very hard every day. The ingredients were always the freshest and best quality. He has five stars from me. We have never had a whole week of such delicious and creative prepared meals, lunch and dinner, and the breakfasts were great with fresh fruits, breads and patisseries, cold cuts and cheeses, etc.

They have done a great job with the built-in cabinets and drawers in the cabins, and we had enough storage space for what we needed day to day. The room and was immaculate, beds and bedding comfortable, nice up-to-date shower always with plenty of hot water, and the towels so thick and heavy I had a hard time drying myself (this is not a complaint).

In addition to the cruise being an extra special experience, there were several occasions that made it even more so. Our daughter's birthday was July 12th, the day we boarded the Hirondelle. Chef Jamie made a spectacular Black Forest birthday cake for her complete with candles and the crew sang Happy Birthday to her. We were celebrating our 60th Wedding Anniversary and were presented with a lovely note and bottle of champagne by the crew which of course we shared with our cruise companions and crew. It was probably a once-in-a-lifetime to be in France on Bastille Day which we celebrated in two different towns --a parade on Bastille Eve and then parade and fireworks on Bastille Day. What a memory we have of sitting on the barge as the fireworks were shot off over us on the river. Some of us also joined the town people as they celebrated and paraded through their towns. Also special was simply meeting our barge companions and sharing our week together on this incredibly wonderful cruise.

The Barge Lady's quick response to all of our e-mails made us feel very comfortable and confident that this trip was definitely going to be all we imagined it to be You worked with us in a friendly and informative manner. We never had any concerns about the booking and preparation for the trip. Also the material you gave us regarding hotels in Paris was helpful. All of our questions were answered immediately. Everything was right on schedule making it easy to plan ahead. We also appreciated your referral for trip cancellation insurance. Really, I don't know how you could improve your service."

"Dear Ellen and Caroline, we had a great time on the Hirondelle! We LOVED the barge, the crew, the food, the excursions -- AND the wines! Our group already wants to look into the Alsace-Lorraine barge cruise for next year. Thanks for all you do."
