Introducing the newly renovated barge Johanna Somail, but nonetheless one with a long history on the Canal du Midi. Owner-Captain William Cowley’s family owns the Johanna and he grew up on the vessel since he was two years old.
Captain William is thus poised to offer the ultimate insider’s view of the lifestyle, personalities, and viniculture of the region. “I am pretty sure I know all the secret spots on the Canal du Midi. I’ve got so many stories to tell and experiences to share, especially drawing on personal relationships with local farmers and wine producers,” he says.
Upon boarding, guests will be delighted with the modern and comfortable Johanna Somail. The skylit salon-dining area is a light and bright place to socialize with friends both old and new. Two cozy cabins, one with a Queen bed and one with a King bed, beguile with colorful décor and local artwork, while on deck it’s pleasant to savor an al fresco luncheon or laze in the hot tub as idyllic scenery floats by.
Cuisine onboard features freshly picked produce grown in William’s own garden, accompanied by boutique wines of the region – including a few gems from his personal cellar. ” Most of the wines served onboard are regional, including Corbieres, Minervois, Limoux, Saint Chinian – selected to complement our menu,” William explains. “Having worked in the grape-picking industry, I can introduce these wines with great stories about wine growing and winemaking.”
Onshore sightseeing showcases the Canal du Midi’s past and present. Excursions include a tour of Pezenas, a lively town full of art, history, and shopping; mingling with locals as they select produce and cheeses in Narbonne’s covered food market; and walking the ramparts of the Medieval walled city of Carcassonne. An especially authentic taste of the region is when the Johanna cruises across the Etang du Thau, past oyster beds and fishing boats, and serves these freshly harvested products onboard.
