Johanna

Representing a dynamic approach to the "Boutique" class experience, the Johanna is the inspired creation of owners Kris and Patsie Rostaert. Stepping aboard the Johanna, one is transported to a charming world of casual living, relaxed socializing, and Continental flair.

Bringing a youthful energy to their programming, Kris and Patsie, pictured at right, offer their guests a delightfully cosmopolitan experience, fueled by their ongoing multi-lingual conversation, effortlessly traversing between English, French, and Dutch! This is but one of their many collective talents. Kris operates the Johanna with pride and panache, eager to talk about the boat's robust engine and "sea-worthy" construction, while Patsie's adorable open kitchen is the heart of the comfortable salon/dining area. A flower-festooned deck, new shade structure, and welcoming picnic table encourages guests to linger outside, while the boat's three cozy cabins boast ample built-in storage space and are cheerfully decorated with bright pops of color.

Kris and Patsie are both Belgian, bringing varied and interesting talents to the barge experience. After lengthy careers in both the maritime and business worlds, Kris was drawn to the attractive qualities of the hospitality industry, and the idea of the Johanna was born. Patsie was a high level Olympic gymnast and professor of physical education who always enjoyed cooking as a serious hobby, and now conceives and creates all the meals served aboard the Johanna. Exploring her extensive collection of cookbooks, cooking magazines, and cookware is part of the Johanna experience.

Dining aboard the Johanna is a convivial affair, beginning with the chic and simple dishware partnered with whimsical place settings. Patsie's versatile menus are inspired by her ongoing culinary explorations, and she has developed strong relationships with local markets and specialty grocers, ensuring the ingredients aboard the Johanna are fresh and seasonal. Patsie especially enjoys creating seafood-based dishes, and her desserts are absolutely spectacular, as her other passion is -- of course -- for deluxe Belgian chocolate! She can also make her own ice cream, using regional fruits for these special concoctions. Two dinners are taken off the boat, at guest's expense. Kris and Patsie will recommend local bistros, as well as provide transportation to and from these venues.

Relaxation, tranquility, and peacefulness are the hallmarks of the Johanna’s experience. Once aboard the Johanna, guests are encouraged to explore the boat's cruising region at a leisurely pace. Personalized excursions include visits to rambling gardens, small museums, and sleepy villages, and guests are always welcome to take a stroll or bike ride on the canal's towpaths. As an additional amenity truly unique to Johanna, Patsie can lead yoga sessions or stretching classes on the Johanna's deck as well! The Barge Ladies are pleased to bring the Johanna into our fleet as a great choice for guests desiring an informal yet authentic canal cruise.

Johanna Champagne Cruise Itinerary

Reims to Chateau thierry on the River Marne

Sunday: Check-in and Welcome Aboard in Reims
Enjoy an illuminated evening excursion
In the mid-afternoon, guests check-in at the central meeting point, and are transported to the boat's mooring in Reims. Welcome aboard, and meet your crew, including the barge cats, Babou and Coténoir. An evening excursion to Reims’ magnificently illuminated cathedral sets the tone for your many memorable experiences in Champagne. The first of Patsie’s delicious dinners on board, perhaps paired with Captain Kris’ favorite Belgian beer!

Monday: Reims to Billy-le-Grand
A mid-morning cruise and your choice of afternoon activities
Wake up to a light breakfast buffet and cruise to the tunnel of Billy-le-Grand, once a sophisticated connecting canal for commercial traffic, now a charming antiquity on the Johanna's barging route. This afternoon's sightseeing is amidst the mountains and vineyards of Reims. Visit to the recently refurbished "Lighthouse of Verzenay", and tour the National Forest of Verzy and explore the world's principal reserve of dwarf beech trees. Have a tipple and "taste the place" at Guillon, a small batch whiskey distillery with informal tours and casual samplings, or tour a snail farm and enjoy a special sampling of the iconic French dish, escargot! Dinner on board.

Tuesday: Billy-le-Grand to Condé-sur-Marne
Descend into the beautiful Marne Valley and enjoy dinner ashore
Today the Johanna once again cruises in the morning, descending into the Marne Valley by traversing the eight locks to Condé-sur-Marne. Relax on deck, or perhaps go for a bicycle ride. A late morning mooring and on board lunch is followed by an afternoon excursion to Chalons-en-Champagne with its collegiate church, Notre-Dame-en-Vaux, which boasts a 56-bell carillon. Foodies and Francophiles could select a visit to the lively covered market, or perhaps just linger at a small café with a coffee or tea. Finally, a stop at the the XVII century Sainte-Croix gate appeals to those for whom European history is of interest. This evening, you dine like a local with the locals, as dinner is taken ashore at a local auberge.

Wednesday: Condé-sur-Marne to Epernay
The best of local bubbles, and another dinner ashore
Your floating hotel barge next cruises to Epernay, capital city of the Champagne region. Here is where the largest Champagne producers open their well-stocked cellars for tours and tastings. Today's excursions begin in the picturesque village of Hautvillers where Dom Perignon first invented the famous drink! Enjoy samplings of the region's signature wine, one at a larger Champagne house in the charming wine town of Cumières, and enjoy even more bubbly at a small, family-owned cellar. Cheers! Sip and savor regional cuisine tonight, as dinner is taken ashore at an area bistro.

Thursday: Epernay to Dormans
Fine vines and wine time
We cruise further on the canal with the area's vistas of vineyards visible above us. Relax this morning with coffee on deck and revel in the wonderful views of the rolling Reims mountains. At Dormans, a selection of many gourmet experiences and excursions await. Visit a local snail farm for the freshest of escargot, or tour the Dom Caudron winery complete with another Champagne and chocolate pairing. Museum-lovers are encouraged to stop at the "Ecomusee Champenois" to view the collection of antique distillery implements, while those intrigued by military history can see the moving Battlefields of the Marne. Return to the Johanna for one of Patsie's memorable dinners.

Friday: Dormans to Chateau-Thierry
A peek into the past, and then a final repast
A leisurely cruise and Pastie's inspired cuisine begins your day. The Johanna enters Picardy region, following the meandering Marne to the final destination at Château-Thierry. The ruins of the castle of Chateau-Thierry tower high above the city, offering a splendid view on the town and the Marne valley below as well as some insight in medieval building and life. A quiet place of many important historical landmarks, guests can visit the American WWI Monument and the Belleau Wood memorial site. For guests interested in charming local flavor, the works of French fable author Jean de la Fontaine come to life in a collection of artworks, statures, and ceramics which are displayed in many adorable villages around Chateau-Thierry. Finish your time spent on board the Johanna with Patsie's celebratory Captain's Dinner, perhaps with a special Belgian chocolate dessert…?

Saturday: Chateau-Thierry
A Sad Farewell
After breakfast, check out and return to the central drop-off point in Reims via private transfer. Please make all onward travel plans no earlier than 11:00 am.
