L'Impressionniste

The Barge Lady's top team Caroline Sack Klein (Director of Operations) and Kelly Weiss (Creative Director) cruised on the Impressionniste in 2014. Here is their report:

"We boarded to find a very congenial group of fellow cruisers - of many ages and backgrounds. But it was as if we had all known each other forever. Everyone was open to meeting new people and to having fun. The Impressionniste delivered spacious cabins, interesting excursions, a service-oriented crew, and most of all, fantastic cuisine! Our young and attractive chef Marie served cuisine moderate in portions but rich in flavor - and it was elegantly presented, too. Go to the menu section for pictures and a selection of delicious lunches and dinners. The hostess was delightful in her daily presentation and explanation of the wines and cheeses; of course, many wines of the Burgundy region were featured.

Speaking of wine, our visits to the vineyards of the Cote d'Or were very special. Our guide James is very knowledgeable about the vintages and we tasted wines completely new to us. We thoroughly enjoyed the sightseeing, especially the historic Hospice de Beaune and the restored Abbaye de la Bussiere where we ate lunch. The scenery was incredible. Every day we got up early to jog or bicycle. The towpath was very well maintained. We were able to explore in the little villages that line the canal. Overall, we enjoyed this lively barge and hope to return soon."

Decor on board features striking original oil paintings as well as copies of the great Impressionist masterpieces. The salon-dining area is welcoming and comfortable, reflecting the ambiance of this classic Deluxe vessel.  L'Impressionniste is the only 12-passenger vessel on this outstanding route. The drives through the vineyards to the wine villages are divinely beautiful. Other high points include the pristine Hospice de Beaune; Dijon with its Medieval Core; and wine-tasting at top venues. Shop for antiques, gourmet foods and souvenirs in Dijon and Beaune.

Given the beauty of the route, the abundance of walking and bicycling opportunities, and the top sightseeing and winetasting available in the Cote d'Or, cruising on L'Impressionniste is a top experience. Our guests adored this barge!"

L' Impressionniste Burgundy Cruise Itinerary

ESCOMMES to FLEUReY-SUR-OUCHE on the canal de bourgogne

Sunday: Paris to Escommes
A Private Chauffeured Transfer From Paris to the barge!
You’ll be met at 2:30 pm in the lobby of the Hotel Westminster, elegantly located on the Right Bank near to major tourist attractions and shopping. From there, drive directly in the barge minivan to Escommes, a tiny harbor on the Canal de Bourgogne in Burgundy from where your cruise begins.  Estimated travel time is four hours.  Once on board, enjoy the traditional champagne welcome and introduction to crew.  There will be time to walk into town or take the bicycles out for a spin before the first of many gourmet dinners on board.

Monday: Escommes to Vandenesse-en-Auxois
Privately-Owned Chateau
We begin our voyage this morning from the canal summit in Escommes, 1,250 feet above sea level and cruise to Vandenesse-en-Auxois. This afternoon we visit Château de Bussy-Rabutin, once the home of the Comte Roger de Bussy-Rabutin who was exiled to his estate due in part to his scandalous lifestyle and satirical chronicles of French nobility which found him in great disfavour with King Louis XIV. There is time to stroll through the French-style gardens and enjoy the views of the château surrounded by its moat. Dinner on board.

Tuesday: Vandenesse-en-Auxois to Pont d’Ouche
Hilltop medieval village

This morning we cruise to Pont d’Ouche, crossing the only canal bridge on the Burgundy Canal and a perfect time to explore the towpath on foot or bicycle. After lunch, we visit the medieval village, craft shops, and castle of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, once an outpost of the Dukes of Burgundy and offering a fine overview of the feeder lakes, canal, and surrounding countryside. Dinner on board.

Wednesday: Pont d’Ouche to La Bussiere
Lunch in an Elegant Chateau
After a short morning cruise, we set off on a drive through Premier Cru vineyards, stopping en route at the “vigne de l’enfant Jesus”, a famous vineyard owned by the domaine Bouchard et Père Fils. There, a wine expert will tell us more about the domaine and give us a real insight into the production of its Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines. We continue to Beaune, capital of Burgundy wine country, for a winery tour and private tasting of Bouchard et Père Fils wines before enjoying a gastronomic lunch in the delightful orangery of Château de Beaune, owned by the winery since 1820. Afterwards, we visit the fascinating 15th century Hôtel-Dieu Hospice and explore the quaint shops of the town, before returning to the barge for a short evening cruise to Pont d’Ouche. Dinner on board.

Thursday: La Bussiere to Sainte-Marie-sur-Ouche
Winetasting at Clos de Vougeot
After breakfast, we cruise to Sainte-Marie-sur-Ouche, again with plenty of opportunity to walk or cycle along the ever-present towpath past sleepy villages and pretty lock houses. In the afternoon we visit Clos de Vougeot, headquarters of the esteemed Chevaliers du Tastevin, who annually award prized special labels to the finest Côte d‘Or vintages. We also enjoy a tasting of fine Burgundy wines in the cellars of the reputable domaine, Château André Ziltener, a family-run winery built on the foundations of an old Cistercian abbey. Dinner on board.

Friday: Sainte Marie sur Ouche to Fleurey-sur Ouche
Explore Dijon
This morning, we take a walking tour of old Dijon, including a visit to the vivid flower and produce markets, mustard shops, and the impressive Notre-Dame de Dijon, or enjoy some excellent shopping time. Return to the hotel barge for lunch and a leisurely afternoon cruise, with perhaps a walk or bicycle ride to the next lock or two, to arrive at our final mooring at Fleurey-sur-Ouche. Captain’s Farewell Dinner on board.

Saturday: Fleurey-sur-Ouche to Paris
A Sad Farewell
Your chauffeured transfer back to the Hotel Westminster departs at 9:00 am, and estimated arrival time into Paris is 1:00 pm. URGENT: Please make all onward travel plans out of Paris today on the basis of this timing.  Breakfast is your last on-board meal.  We hope to see you again on another Go Barging/European Waterways vessel.  What about Scotland on the Scottish Highlander -– look for the monster as the barge crosses legendary Loch Ness!

L' Impressionniste Guest Book

"One word to sum up our experience on the barge L'impressionniste -- 'perfect'. We cannot say enough good things about our crew. They made us feel right at home. The cuisine was fabulous, the wine perfect, and the excursions a ton of fun. Our Captain, Daniel Jones, was wonderful. All of the others were extremely nice and sociable, and a lot of fun. Scotty, the Chef, worked wonders in the galley and prepared 'to-die-for' meals. Her menus exceeded expectations by light years. Truly fabulous, with great wine pairings. We are still talking about the food. The daily excursions were a lot of fun, especially the tour of the Bouchard vineyard in Beaune. The cellars, and the history of it all, was quite fascinating, and our Tour Guide, Charles, really stepped to the plate and made it quite an experience. Barge Lady services were excellent. I would highly recommend you -- and have been recommending you."

- Robert A. Migliaccio, cruised September, 2016

"The trip was perfect. From this 82-year-old grandfather, to my youngest grandchild 10 years old, we all loved it. I cannot say enough about the crew. They were a delight to be with, from Daniel the Captain on down, and provided exceptional service. When we left we all embraced as if we had known them as close relatives for a long period of time. I would say that they were a major factor in the trip being so delightful. The food and wines were excellent and the Chef, Scotty, was attentive and extremely pleasant. To sum it up, a stupendous experience. My thanks to you for everything you did for us."

- Simeon Brinburg and Family, cruised August, 2016

"If I was a teacher, I'd grade the cruise on the L'Impressionniste A++...Crew couldn't have been any nicer or more accommodating. Made us feel comfortable from the very first. All of them were professional, but relaxed, informative, and always friendly. Chef Scotty was a princess! She worked hard to give us fresh and tasty dishes. Each sightseeing trip was new and different in its own way. Cabins were fine, clean, and freshened every day. From the very start, Ellen and the Barge Ladies were very helpful to us in putting together a trip of a lifetime...thanks to all. It was a special experience, and extra special since we had our whole family with us."

- Bob Walhert and Family, cruised July, 2016

"EVERYTHING was wonderful! We loved every quaff of wine, every morsel of food, and every excursion. The outstanding crew, led by Captain Paul, were there to satisfy our every wish. Scotty, the Chef, was creative and professional. Our family enjoyed every minute."

- Donna Wahlert, cruised July, 2016

"We had a perfect trip on the L'Impressionniste -- it could not have been better! We loved each member of the wonderful crew. Meals were delicious and we enjoyed all the excursions -- the wine tasting and lunch at Bouchard Pere et Fils was exceptional. Cabins were comfortable. The Barge Lady's services were excellent. The was this trip of a lifetime."
