La Nouvelle Etoile

Alsace-Lorraine is one of our favorite regions in France. Captain Jan Meijer offers particularly personalized cruises. In addition to the expected sights in Strasbourg and Nancy, he adds excursions to a privately-owned Renaissance chateau, a fortified town, and visits a village where glass is still blown by hand. Explore an enchanting wine village-and taste the local wines.

Jan Meijer runs one of the most accomplished and congenial operations in barging - beginning with the vessel itself. NOUVELLE ETOILE boasts a long list of innovations: an elevator, a handicap access cabin, computers in every cabin (with e-mail and a navigational system that the passengers can access), an exercise room, a washer and dryer for the guests and sput poles that allow the barge to stop anywhere without tying up.

NOUVELLE ETOILE ("New Star") is the dream barge of Captain Meijer, who was born into a Dutch shipping familly - and thus knows more than the average barge captain about design and navigation. But not at the expense of elegance and comfort!

The spacious suites boast oversized showers, double sinks and rich interiors design. The salon-dining room is designed for socializing. Guests congregate at the gorgeous bar. There is lots of good seating - even a piano for those so inclined.

Jan Meijer runs a top operation - one defined by divine cuisine, the depth and breadth of the wine selection, and extremely literate sightseeing.

La Nouvelle Etoile Alsace-Lorraine Cruise Itinerary

Nancy to Hochfelden (Strasbourg) in the Alsace-Lorraine

Sunday: Board in Nancy, Cruise to Laneuville
Champagne Welcome
After being met by our driver at mid afternoon you will be chauffeured to La Nouvelle Etoile moored in Nancy. After a wonderful champagne welcome we will set off for a short late afternoon cruise to Laneuville. Tonight, enjoy your first of many gourmet meals on board.

Monday: Cruise to LaGarde
Elegant Art Nouveau in Nancy
We will cruise during breakfast and then drive back to Nancy for a walking tour of the city beginning at the elegant Place Stanislas, see above. Flanked by handsome Baroque palaces and enclosed by ornate gold and wrought iron entry gates, the square is considered one of the grandest in all of France. The Art Nouveau movement originated in Nancy. We may visit the Musee de l’Ecole De Nancy to see its fine collection. Return to La Nouvelle Etoile for a leisurely afternoon cruise to Lagarde.

Tuesday: Sarrebourg
Famous Chagal Windows
After a morning cruise past tidy farms and pasture-lands visit one of the local Cristalleries where fine crystal is still blown by hand. There will be an opportunity to purchase crystal as well. Then continue Sarrebourg to have a look at Chapelle des Cordeliers, with its beautiful Marc Chagal windows.

Wednesday: Cruise to Lutzelbourg
Incredible barge lift!
Each day we travel on the canal we have been gradually climbing to the crest of the Vosges Mountains. After navigating two tunnels carved into the mountaintop, we will encounter the Inclined Plane at Arzviller. This unique lock allows a barge to glide effortlessly up or down the mountainside using a system of weights and balances. We continue the cruise through the Zorn Valley where the surrounding hilltops are dotted with ruins of feudal castles. Our overnight stay will be in Lutzelbourg.

Thursday: Cruise to Saverne
Adorable villages and winetasting on the Route de Vin
This morning we wind our way through the heart of Saverne past the regal 18th century Bishop’s Palace. From Saverne we will take an afternoon drive along the Route du Vin d’Alsace to the old fortified town of Obernai, see below, where we will visit the Market Square and the 14th century ramparts that surround the city. Stop along the way at a vineyard to taste some of the best Alsatian wines.

Friday: Cruise to Hochfelden
So much to see in Strasbourg!
Today we will finish the cruise in Hochfelden just outside of Strasbourg. Our afternoon tour of Strasbourg, pictured below, includes the folk museum and the 11th century Gothic cathedral, leaving enough time to stroll around to explore the fine shops. Returning to the barge late in the afternoon you will enjoy your last gourmet dinner on board.

Saturday: Strasbourg Transfer
A Sad Farewell
After a last elegant breakfast, depart at 9:30am and we'll chauffeur you to any destination in Strasbourg or immediate environs: A local hotel, rental car office, airport or train station. (from where TGV trains depart regularly to Paris, arrive in less than three hours!)

La Nouvelle Etoile Guest Book

Guests on Alsace barge La Nouvelle Etoile in France

"My wife and I are back home with many happy memories of our cruise aboard La Nouvelle Etoile. As to the crew, we couldn't have been more pleased. We would have been quite happy to receive the same level of attention as we had on our prior trip; however this years experience even exceeded that. Captain Jan as always was the genial host, and this year the role of Hostess was given to Stephanie who was everything we could have asked for. And then there was our wonderful Renaissance man, Franck, who was our Tour Guide, chauffeur, and entertainer. Our Chef, Martin was new to us this year, but plied us with extraordinary meals three times a day. His cuisine was exceptional, and accompanied by excellent selections of wines and cheeses. Melinda, our Hostess, was also new to us but rounded out an excellent team who saw to our every wish with cheerfulness and professionalism.

Sightseeing opportunities were wonderful. Hard to pick the 'most' enjoyable one. Being a bit of a history buff, being in Chateaux Thierry as well as seeing the site of the German surrender in WWII in Reims were special for me. Also being a lover of all things technical, the visit to the small family vineyard, from which Jan has purchased his champagne for many years, afforded me an understanding of the magic that produces such a wonderful beverage. Then to end the trip with the cruise through Paris was really special. Our cabin on the barge was very familiar as we had cruised on La Nouvelle Etoile before. We were quite comfortable. The pre-trip information provided by the Barge Ladies was informative and helped us select our hotel in Paris prior to boarding the barge. We chose the Hotel Raphael and were very pleased with the whole experience there. In summary, the trip was everything we hoped for, and then some. Thanks for another wonderful experience."

- Carroll and Jimsie Hart, cruised July, 2016 (repeat Barge Lady guests)

"My cruise on La Nouvelle Etoile was simply perfect! Everything went smoothly. The boat was fantastic, the food incredible, Captain Jan and the crew delightful and accommodating, the tours fascinating. My favorite of the tours was the visit to the Nolet Distillery, where Ketel One is made. The Keukenhof Gardens, which was the one I most looked forward to, did not disappoint. Barge Lady Lori was most helpful in preparing for the trip. I am most appreciative of The Barge Lady's efforts. I will not hesitate to recommend you and the trip to friends."

- Diane Hockstader, cruised April, 2016

"We loved every minute! Our crew was excellent -- a big thank-you to Captain Jan, Diana, Chef Martin, and Tour Guide Franck! Cuisine was delicious and the wine was outstanding. We learned a lot about cheese as well. We enjoyed all excursions and sightseeing. The flowers along the canal and in each town were beautiful, and the Chateau de Fleville was most interesting. The Museum of Fine Arts in Nancy is a must-see! Our cabin was very well-appointed and comfortable, and we had everything we needed. Barge Lady services were excellent, and provided all documents and needed information about the cruise, hotels, and trains. All of our questions were answered before our journey started. Thank you!"

- Sarah Bear, cruised October, 2015

"Dear Ellen -– You, Jan, and Diana truly make dreams come true! On board, Jan and Diana create an incredible ambiance on the beautiful and elegant La Nouvelle Etoile. She is truly the 'Shining Star' among all barges -- the Polaris of all barge cruising. They sprinkled each experience, especially the evenings, with a little bit of that 'Dutch Magic' that goes way beyond the beautiful silverware, china, crystal, linens, music, flowers, lighting, and paneling. The food and beverage is top drawer, but it is their personal touch that makes the nightly dinners unforgettable. Jan and Diana have perfected the role of host and hostess to such a high level that to spend an evening meal in their lovely 'home' is a truly incomparable experience. You made our 25th Wedding Anniversary so very special and created a lifetime memory. Thank you for all the hard work including the train tickets and maps."

- Patrick and Mary Sanders, cruised October, 2015 (repeat Barge Lady guests)

"The crew all went out of their way to make our experience memorable. Cuisine was all well prepared, tasty, and the quantities not excessive. We loved the Chagal excursion. Cabins were clean, comfortable, and roomy. We have done three or four barge trips in the past. Certainly La Nouvelle Etoile is by far the best appointed barge I have had the opportunity to experience. Being part of a group of acquaintances enhances the experience and seems wise. The trip was very enjoyable and we are trying to figure out a way to set up an encore."

- Peter Sidell, cruised September, 2015

"We have had the pleasure of travelling with Captain Jan, Diana, and Tour Guide Franck twice before. With their years of barging experience, you are in safe hands and everything runs like clockwork. They were as welcoming as ever and Franck worked hard to find us some interesting outings and diversions along the way. He seeks out the best local guides and obtains tickets in advance to eliminate queueing. We greatly enjoyed all of the daily excursions – they captivated our attention, and were the perfect length.

This year they were joined by Hostess Melissa, who looked after the housekeeping, and Chef Martin, who provided some wonderfully attractive and well balanced food, using a wealth of local ingredients. The style of cuisine is set by Jan and Diana and is based on their knowledge of what suits their clients. Martin is a talented young chef and is clearly enjoying adding his own ideas to the menus. The outcome was well-balanced meals, beautifully produced and accompanied by Jan and Diana's carefully chosen wines.

Cabins are clean and tidy and in very good decorative order. The wardrobe and cupboards provided more than adequate space and there is additional storage under the beds where soft bags or small cases can be stored out of the way. The bathroom is a good size with a large shower cubicle and plentiful hot water. We appreciated the fresh flowers and chocolate gifts that were in the cabin on arrival.

This was our sixth trip booked with the Barge Lady. Doesn't that say it all? You pre-trip information is particularly useful for first-time travelers as it gives a good overview of what to expect, addresses those awkward questions such as what to take and what not to take in the way of clothing and valuables and offers guidance about tipping. You are our barge agent of choice because of the high and consistent level of service you deliver."
