La Nouvelle Etoile

LA NOUVELLE ETIOLE opened a new route in 2010, the Upper Loire. This is a route of many contrasts - from the magnificance of the royal chateau at Fountainbleau to the quiet villages and landmarks dating from hundreds of years ago. Flower bedecked towns such as Montargis and Moret-sur-Loing provide a glimpse into the talent of the French people for creating beauty everywhere.

Into this lovely and authentic area, NOUVELLE ETOILE provides the most luxurious possible "floating hotel" experience. Owner Jan Meijer runs one of the most accomplished and congenial operations in barging - beginning with the vessel itself. NOUVELLE ETOILE boasts a long list of innovations: an elevator, a handicap access cabin, computers in every cabin (with e-mail and a navigational system that the passengers can access), an exercise room, a washer and dryer for the guests and sput poles that allow the barge to stop anywhere without tying up.

NOUVELLE ETOILE ("New Star") is the dream barge of Captain Meijer, who was born into a Dutch shipping familly - and thus knows more than the average barge captain about design and navigation. But not at the expense of elegance and comfort!

The spacious suites boast oversized showers, double sinks and rich interiors design. The salon-dining room is designed for socializing. Guests congregate at the gorgeous bar. There is lots of good seating - even a piano for those so inclined.

Jan Meijer runs a top operation - one defined by divine cuisine, the depth and breadth of the wine selection, and extremely literate sightseeing.

La Nouvelle Etoile Upper Loire Cruise

Moret-sur-Loing to Briare Itinerary

Sunday: Paris to Moret-sur-Loing
Impressionist Painter's Village
You will be met by our driver at your Paris hotel and driven to La Nouvelle Etoile moored in St. Mammes in the heart of the Fontainebleau forest. After a Champagne welcome you can take a stroll though the medieval walled town of Moret-sur Loing, known to many as the home of the famous Impressionist painter, Alfred Sisley. Tonight you can enjoy your first of many gourmet meals on board.

Monday:Moret-sur-Loing to Nemours
Fountainebleau- Where French King's Lived!
Today, we begin our cruise into the Upper Loire region, affectionately known as the “Garden of Paris”, this little known region gently reveals its secrets. After lunch, we visit the Palace of Fontainebleau, pictured below, to walk through this palace is to walk through the history of France. Every royal family has added its own architectural style. On our drive back to the barge it may be possible to visit the artist community of Barbizon. We will moor for the night in Nemours.

Tuesday:
Nemours to Montargis
Walk, Bicycle, Relax: Float deep in the French Countryside
Today, we will have a full day cruise on the canal to Montargis with plenty of opportunity to bike or walk along the side of the canal. After lunch we will visit Montargis also called “Little Venice of the Gatinais” because of it’s numerous canals. Visit one off the many museums or shop at the famous Mazet Praline shop with its exquisitely packaged delicacies.

Wednesday: Montargis to Chatillon Coligny
10th Century Chateau

After breakfast, we will set off for a leisure cruise to the charming village of Chatillon Coligny. This afternoon, we will take a drive out to the splendid 10th century Chateau Fargeau, pictured  below. The chateau is  over a thousand years old and the most important history place of Puisaye Forterre. In the evening there is time to stroll around the ramparts that surrounded the village of Chatillon-Colligny.

Thursday: Chatillon Coligny to Rogny-les-sept-Ecluses
Antique Staircase of Locks
Continuing our cruise up-hill we will reach Rogny-les-sept-Ecluses (the seven locks of Rogny). This “staircase” of seven locks was build in 1648 and an impressive tribute to the engineers of the past. After another gorgeous lunch we will take a short drive out to the beautiful town of Gien, built on the river banks of the Loire. Gien is famous for its faïence earthenware and we will visit the faïence factory and museum.

Friday: Rogny-les-sept-Ecluses to Briare
Cruise on a Bridge Designed by Eiffel
After passing the locks of Rogny, we have reached the highest summit of the canal and we will now start to descent down towards the river Loire. In Briare, we will cross the Loire valley on a canal bridge, pictured at left. This magnificent structure was designed by Gustav Eiffel in 1890. This afternoon we will take the opportunity to drive out to the Sancerre wine region to sample some of this delicious wine and maybe taste some of the local Crottin de Chavignol cheese on our way back to the ship. Tonight will be your farewell dinner on board.

Saturday: Return to Paris
A Sad Farewell
This will be your last elegant breakfast on board and then you will be driven back to your hotel in Paris. Estimated arrival time in Paris is noon. We hope to see you again on LA NOUVELLE ETIOLE.

La Nouvelle Etoile Guest Book

Guests on Alsace barge La Nouvelle Etoile in France

"My wife and I are back home with many happy memories of our cruise aboard La Nouvelle Etoile. As to the crew, we couldn't have been more pleased. We would have been quite happy to receive the same level of attention as we had on our prior trip; however this years experience even exceeded that. Captain Jan as always was the genial host, and this year the role of Hostess was given to Stephanie who was everything we could have asked for. And then there was our wonderful Renaissance man, Franck, who was our Tour Guide, chauffeur, and entertainer. Our Chef, Martin was new to us this year, but plied us with extraordinary meals three times a day. His cuisine was exceptional, and accompanied by excellent selections of wines and cheeses. Melinda, our Hostess, was also new to us but rounded out an excellent team who saw to our every wish with cheerfulness and professionalism.

Sightseeing opportunities were wonderful. Hard to pick the 'most' enjoyable one. Being a bit of a history buff, being in Chateaux Thierry as well as seeing the site of the German surrender in WWII in Reims were special for me. Also being a lover of all things technical, the visit to the small family vineyard, from which Jan has purchased his champagne for many years, afforded me an understanding of the magic that produces such a wonderful beverage. Then to end the trip with the cruise through Paris was really special. Our cabin on the barge was very familiar as we had cruised on La Nouvelle Etoile before. We were quite comfortable. The pre-trip information provided by the Barge Ladies was informative and helped us select our hotel in Paris prior to boarding the barge. We chose the Hotel Raphael and were very pleased with the whole experience there. In summary, the trip was everything we hoped for, and then some. Thanks for another wonderful experience."

- Carroll and Jimsie Hart, cruised July, 2016 (repeat Barge Lady guests)

"My cruise on La Nouvelle Etoile was simply perfect! Everything went smoothly. The boat was fantastic, the food incredible, Captain Jan and the crew delightful and accommodating, the tours fascinating. My favorite of the tours was the visit to the Nolet Distillery, where Ketel One is made. The Keukenhof Gardens, which was the one I most looked forward to, did not disappoint. Barge Lady Lori was most helpful in preparing for the trip. I am most appreciative of The Barge Lady's efforts. I will not hesitate to recommend you and the trip to friends."

- Diane Hockstader, cruised April, 2016

"We loved every minute! Our crew was excellent -- a big thank-you to Captain Jan, Diana, Chef Martin, and Tour Guide Franck! Cuisine was delicious and the wine was outstanding. We learned a lot about cheese as well. We enjoyed all excursions and sightseeing. The flowers along the canal and in each town were beautiful, and the Chateau de Fleville was most interesting. The Museum of Fine Arts in Nancy is a must-see! Our cabin was very well-appointed and comfortable, and we had everything we needed. Barge Lady services were excellent, and provided all documents and needed information about the cruise, hotels, and trains. All of our questions were answered before our journey started. Thank you!"

- Sarah Bear, cruised October, 2015

"Dear Ellen -– You, Jan, and Diana truly make dreams come true! On board, Jan and Diana create an incredible ambiance on the beautiful and elegant La Nouvelle Etoile. She is truly the 'Shining Star' among all barges -- the Polaris of all barge cruising. They sprinkled each experience, especially the evenings, with a little bit of that 'Dutch Magic' that goes way beyond the beautiful silverware, china, crystal, linens, music, flowers, lighting, and paneling. The food and beverage is top drawer, but it is their personal touch that makes the nightly dinners unforgettable. Jan and Diana have perfected the role of host and hostess to such a high level that to spend an evening meal in their lovely 'home' is a truly incomparable experience. You made our 25th Wedding Anniversary so very special and created a lifetime memory. Thank you for all the hard work including the train tickets and maps."

- Patrick and Mary Sanders, cruised October, 2015 (repeat Barge Lady guests)

"The crew all went out of their way to make our experience memorable. Cuisine was all well prepared, tasty, and the quantities not excessive. We loved the Chagal excursion. Cabins were clean, comfortable, and roomy. We have done three or four barge trips in the past. Certainly La Nouvelle Etoile is by far the best appointed barge I have had the opportunity to experience. Being part of a group of acquaintances enhances the experience and seems wise. The trip was very enjoyable and we are trying to figure out a way to set up an encore."
