Champagne
Barging in Champagne, a region immediately east of Paris, takes place on the Marne River and several small, parallel canals. Although Champagne is replete with enchanting towns, Gothic churches, battlefields and abbeys, it is most known for champagne: The very symbol of graceful living and celebration produced nowhere else in the world. All champagnes are made within a few miles of each other outside the main towns of Reims and Epernay. The legendary Benedictine monk Dom Perignon supposedly invented the bubbly by accident in the late 18th century! As barge guests, you will visit and taste at some of the more well known houses, such as Tattinger and Moet et Chandon, as well as small, family-owned producers. 
Other sightseeing includes Reims and its Notre-Dame Cathedral where twenty five French kings were crowned and the smaller and more charming town of Epernay, headquarters of the champagne industry. You'll taste Brie cheese at Meaux, visit a Benedictine abbeye, bicycle on the towpaths and enjoy the villages along the route. Cruising in the Marne Valley is especially scenic. This region inspired many Impressionist painters, including Cezanne and Pissaro.
The Marne Valley has been a battleground through history: From Julius Caesar to World War I, where major and bloody battles were fought. Barge guests may tour major World War I battlefields as well as the American Monument, built in 1929 to commemorate American losses.
