BARGING THE RIVER THAMES
The River Thames reflects a thousand years of British history, personalities and culture - yet it is very alive today. Winding in all directions through idyllic countryside, the river encounters wildlife (including swans that belong to the Queen!), colorful boating regattas, riverside pubs - some hundreds of years old - adorable villages and English country gardens rolling down to the water. Combine the beautiful scenery and rich sights with gourmet cuisine and fine wine: This is your chance to experience traditional barging in the comfortable and compatible culture of England.
The Thames is 215 miles long and is best known for flowing right through London and to such famed cities as Windsor (The Castle lies right on its banks) and the university center of Oxford. The river barge Magna Carta holds down the Lower Thames, an area closer to London and also to some of the world's most famous historic landmarks - such as windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace. Elegant riverside homes contrast with peaceful villages.
Bicycling and walking is almost always available on the Thames Path, while slowing down to go through locks or under ancient bridges spanning the river creates just the right pace. River barge cruising in England always begins and ends in London, one of The Barge Lady's favorite cities. And always you'll be welcomed aboard with a traditional English Cream Tea. And that typical British welcome sums all that is historic, lively and delicious on the River thames!
