BARGING THE SHANNON RIVER
The River Shannon flows for 200 miles north to south through Ireland's center. Strictly speaking, it is not a river at all, but a series of exceptionally scenic lakes connected by rivers and canals. Along its banks are dozens of historic towns, castles and monasteries that testify to Ireland's storied and turbulent history. This is also a waterway on which to observe nature. The river and adjacent floodplain support a wealth of birds, fish and other wildlife.
This waterway is connected to many peoples and personalities. The Romans first mapped it in 300 B.C. The Vikings followed in the first century A.D.and were not driven out for one thousand years. In the 5th and 6th centuries, a series of monasteries were founded along its banks - institutions that kept learning and culture alive in the Dark Ages. Many battles were fought here in the war between England and Ireland, too. Today, it is a peaceful and unspoiled center for boating vacations - just the perfect waterway on which to enjoy a river barge cruise!
