Papillon
Barging in Champagne

of up to six guests
Papillon will spend the 2008 season on several canals in Alsace, Champagne and Burgundy.of up to six guests
Papillon is a petite gem, operated by barging veterans Bill and Jenny Higgs - whose definite ideas about quality inform every aspect of the experience. The vessel is classic in feeling and décor. The three cozy cabins are dressed in lovely wallpapers and fabrics, while the Provencial-tiled baths are spacious and luxurious. A separate dining room reinforces the feeling of civility, while guests can relax in the salon and on the large deck. The Higgs have announced many upgrades for 2008 - including extensive redecoration of the barge, new bikes, and a new Audi/VW minivan. Experienced Chef Sarah (6 seasons on Papillon) and adorable Captain Cederic will be permanent crew in 2008.
If you cruise in Southern Burgundy, pampering begins on the chauffeured transfer from Paris to the barge - which begins at mid-day and includes an excursion to Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte - all before the late afternoon arrival to Papillon. Once in Burgundy, the sights include the covered market in Dijon; Beaune with its amazingly well-preserved 14th - Century Hospice and adorable shopping streets; and wine tasting in the Cot d'Or vineyards. A top crew of four provides creative cuisine and service.
We hope to revisit Papilllon in 2008.
Papillon Barge Cruise Itinerary
Dijon to Vandenesse - en - Auxois
SundayIn the late afternoon I will meet you at the agreed meeting point in Dijon. A short ride in the minibus brings you to the village of Fleurey where the Papillon is moored. A traditional Burgundian welcome awaits you. Relax, unpack, forget time as we usher you into provincial France. Enjoy your first gourmet experience aboard the Papillon. Bon Voyage!
Monday
Before leaving today, we propose a visit to the delightful city of Dijon. Highlights include the Cathedral, theDucal Palace and the shopping district with its half timbered houses. For lovers of art, Dijon boasts the finest museum outside of Paris. After lunch aboard, relax on deck, sip a cool drink of your choice and enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of the Ouche Valley as we cruise our way up to the picturesque village of Gissey sur Ouche. A wonderful gourmet dinner will be served on board. Wine to be presented by the captain. Bon appetit!
Tuesday
A drive over the high plateau of the Haues-Cotes will take us down to the vineyards of the Cote d'Or, the Golden Slopes. We pass through the villages strung along the "Route des Grands Crus" (Road of the Great Wines) to the 12th century Chateau of the Clos de Vougeot. Our introduction to the wines of Burgundy is rounded off by a tasting at one of the best wineries in the region. After a lovely lunch on deck, the Papillon will continue its enchanted journey up the Burgundy Canal, winding its way through beautiful wood clad hills to its overnight mooring at Pont d'Ouche. Dinner on board will be another gourmet experience. Bon Soir!
Wednesday
This morning we strongly advise a visit to the town of Beaune with its world famous Hotel Dieu, the hospital built in the 15th century. The town is charming with cobbled streets and a multitude of flowers. Later we will barge under the walls and the hill top fortress of Chateauneuf. We will spend the night within site of this castle at Vandenesse en Auxois. Dinner tonight is a very special event that will be one of the highlights of your trip. We will escort you to a top Michelin rated restaurant where you will enjoy some of the finest culinary delights that France has to offer. Bonne cuisine!
Thursday
This morning we can visit Chateauneuf or the Chateau de Commarin. A direct contrast in styles, the first is medieval military and the second Renaissance. Commarin has the added distinction of having been owned and lived in by the same family for more than seven hundred years! The afternoon cruise will take us to the continental watershed and traverse this via a two mile long tunnel built by English prisoners during the Napoleonic wars. Evening will find us moored at Pouilly en Auxois. Tonight's dinner will feature special wines highlighting the marriage between wine and food. Salut!
Friday
A morning cruise will take us through idyllic countryside to our end destination in Pont Royal. This afternoon we can propose one of two world renowned sites to visit - the huge 12th century basilica dedicated to Mary Magdalene in Vezelay or the remarkable, perfectly preserved Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay. Either of these places would be a fitting climax to your cruise. The last night aboard is reserved for our Captain's Dinner. The Chef will prepare a very special dinner you will not soon forget. Enjoy the wine and food, and reminisce about the week's adventure. A good memory for all. Bonne Memoires!
Saturday
A sad day for all as we prepare to part company. After breakfast and good-byes, we will drive you back to Dijon where you will take a train to onward destinations. Au Revoir!

"'What do I miss? The French-pressed coffee, jaw-dropping scenery, delicious wines and cheeses, reading on deck under the umbrella, and the fascinating side trips - and that is just to start! I also miss the creative napkin-folding and the gorgeous flower arrangements. I walked into the dining room and siged with happiness because everything was so beautiful. (Even the butter was decorated differently each day!)"
"You have given us an experience that eclipses all other family vacations!"
