Southern Burgundy, France on Barge Rendez-Vous

We are thrilled to present Rendez-Vous, a new and contemporary vessel from the team which created the Prosperite, one of the most successful and advanced barges on the French canals. Debuting in 2002, Prosperite introduced unique experiences such as the open kitchen, from where guests can watch and interact with the chef on an informal basis. A commitment to “casual luxury,” as well as to quality in every aspect, produced extremely satisfied guests and made Prosperite a leader in the Ultra-Deluxe barge market. This success was due in large part to the talents and experience of industry veterans Spencer Hayes and Rejane Hayes, pictured at right. Now this same team of Spencer, Rejane, Earl Robertson and Candy Robertson have joined forces to make their brand of “casual luxury” more affordable on the Rendez-Vous. The barge debuted in July, 2015 on the Canal de Bourgogne, one of the most popular barge routes in France.

Barge Lady's Kelly Weiss recently visited and photographed Rendez-Vous. Here is her report:

“Even though I had seen many earlier pictures, and thought I knew what to expect, I was still surprised and even stunned upon arriving at the barge. Rendez-Vous looks and lives like a boutique hotel, with an entirely different “feel” from traditional barge décor. Adjectives such as sophisticated, chic, sleek, comfortable, dramatic, and advanced all came to mind as I explored every space and amenity! Let’s start in the three cabins, havens of comfort with smart extra touches demanded by the modern traveler. Quality is key, starting with deluxe bedding and then seen in such features as windows that open, individually controlled heating and air conditioning, a safe, and plenty of storage space. Travelers carrying android phones will appreciate the ipod docks with usb ports.

Now exploring the bathrooms: Is it wrong to think of a bathroom as sexy? These certainly are, clad in sleek silver- gray tiles that set off the waterfall sink and shower with rain showerhead. Probably the most plush towels I’ve ever encountered (I plan on buying the same for my bathroom at home) and thoughtful extras such as heated towel rack, two bathrobes, and L'Occitane bath products.

Back in the public areas, the living –dining room opens to the chef’s kitchen and continues the contemporary feel with a black leather sectional couch and chairs providing a complimentary accent to the soft taupe walls and light stone flooring. (Typical of the thought that goes into every detail, that couch has an adjustable back and side to make lounging super personal and super comfortable.) The deck offers exceptional choice for relaxing in two anti-gravity lounge chairs, a cozy banquette (Play cards! Enjoy a board game!) which seats six, and a second seating area consisting of a loveseat and two chairs. Or laze in the hot tub, sip a glass of Grand Cru wine and watch the country side float by – I certainly did. The stainless steel and wooden railings are lit from underneath at night, creating a romantic ambiance that draws guests for an after dinner drink.

Dinner on board is both cozy and dramatic in feel. The chef creates and plates the cuisine from his open kitchen, while as the sun sets, lights on the staircase come on. I loved the gorgeous and colorful table settings, with beautiful linens and flowers. Cuisine on board combines traditional ingredients with modern cooking techniques; of course, wine emphasizes the Burgundy vintages, with tastes of other top wine regions offered as well.

Daily guided and chauffeured sightseeing highlights the good life in Burgundy. Exceptionally, a full day in Beaune is offered; now there is plenty of time to tour the gorgeously-preserved medieval hospice, taste wine, have lunch, and shop. Barge guests usually feel that they have not been given enough time in Beaune – now they have. Other escorted excursions to majestic chateaux, lively villages, and local artisans round out a very personal introduction to Burgundy. A crew of four looks after six guests with a combination of professional experience and warmth.

Rendez-Vous offers thoughtfully realized quality in every aspect: décor, amenities, cuisine, comfort and welcoming ambiance. I loved the Rendez-Vous and the modern luxury it brings to the French canals.”

Gustave Eiffel, a native son of Dijon, designed the market in the 19th century. One of France’s largest and best-known markets, Les Halles comes to life every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday with an incredible selection of meats, candies, cheeses and, of course, fruits and vegetables along with ready-to-eat pastries. This thriving town's raion d’etre is wine: making it, tasting it, selling it, but most of all, drinking it. Your day in Beaune begins at the Hospice, also known as the Hotel Dieu, an immaculately preserved medieval hospital, which amazingly was in full use until the early 20th century.

Then, have lunch at a lively bistro and continue the day with a private mustard tasting – then enjoy free time to shop in the pedestrian zone and stop in the square for a café. Return to Rendez-Vous and dinner on board at your peaceful mooring.

After lunch on board, enjoy a wine tour in the world-famous vineyards of the Cotes de Beaune with an escorted excursion to an authentic "Domaine Bourguignon". Rendez-Vous Guest Book

"One of best vacations ever. The crew aboard the Rendez-vous was fantastic. Rachel, our Hostess, was perfect...personable, anticipated our every need, and just really delightful Michael, our Tour Guide, was knowledgeable, interesting, and just fun. He is really pleasant company...cannot imagine anyone better. Olivier, our Pilot was great. Helpful, kind and a great personality. The crew had a warmth and ease that truly impressive. I enjoyed every moment with them.

Cuisine was excellent. I cannot say enough about what a fantastic chef Joe is. The wine selections were great -- as were the cheeses! I enjoyed all the excursions, as well as the cycling and walking. Cabins were immaculately kept which was very impressive. Barge Lady services were very good. Pre-trip information was all we needed, and the recommendations of what to wear and pack were very helpful. While I am interested in another barge cruise, nothing will compare to this perfect experience."

- Gail Drayton, cruised September, 2016

"Hi Barge Ladies, we just returned from Europe and can now bask in the memories of our time on the Rendez-Vous! People have asked what was our favorite part of the canal cruise and I've said 'the whole barge experience'! It couldn't have been better. We had very high expectations -- and they were exceeded.

Captain Spencer, Chef Joe, Hostess Rachel and Tour Guide Michael were wonderful. They saw to our every need in the most unobtrusive way. Plus they were very fun!! Joe is the most amazing Chef! We loved every one of his meals! What service -- I just mentioned that I love margaritas and Joe and Rachel made the very best margaritas with the freshest salsa I've ever had. A really nice and appreciated gesture. Our cabin was always tidied up whenever we returned. Michael guided us on great excursions to Beaune, Dijon, and elsewhere. We felt totally pampered!

I could go on and on!! Thank you for your wonderful part in making this a trip of a lifetime!"

- Barb Bachman, cruised September, 2016

"It was my mom's 80th birthday and we thought it might be a challenge to find a trip that satisfied three generations, but this one did it for us. We have been on many Caribbean charters with great crews, but this was the best. All the crew members were professional, courteous, knowledgeable and made our trip outstanding. Tour Guide Rejane was the best guide we have had. Very knowledgeable and pleasant. We learned so much about France and the culture. This was an unexpected surprise for us and made the trip a well-rounded and diverse experience. Cuisine was outstanding. Three great meals a day, wine with lunch and dinner, and 21 different cheeses! Chef Herve was great and the service was 5-star. We felt we were in a Michelin-starred restaurant all by ourselves. Cabins were very nice with well-appointed bathrooms. How would I sum up my experience on the Rendez-Vous? The best!"

- Chuck Clark, cruised May, 2016

"We enjoyed every moment -- almost an orgy of fun. Our group was mostly in their 70s but the spoiling we received on aboard made us all feel young. Superb crew of Captain Spencer, Tour Guide Rejane, Chef Joe, and Matelot Emmanuel. Always checking on our requirements and providing top class service in every department. Each day was well filled, and Rejane, a history teacher by background, provided just the right amount of detail, background and humor/candor. Joe is an excellent and talented cook. Terrific menus and matching wines. Add to that his charming personality and willingness to describe dishes and preparation tricks and you have a super combination. Cabins were very comfortable, with plenty of space, and all bathroom amenities/supplies available. Pre-trip information was detailed, comprehensive, and useful. The Barge Lady's services were top notch and the recommendations useful. Everything worked well, in sync, and the program was excellent. Thanks to all of you."

Norm and Pearl St. Pierre, cruised May, 2016

"We loved the barge, especially the crew!! Guide Spencer was wonderful. His manner was very welcoming, and the excursions he chose were incredible…(Oh, also the weather our week was between 65-75 every day with wonderful cool mornings and no rain!!!!). Chef Joe and Captain Fred were both charming and fun, and Joe's food was undoubtedly the best of our trip!! He was a magician, and just a warm, laid back, and extremely talented chef. Fred was congenial and professional, but such fun, quite an adventurer, and a joy to get to know. We even invited them to visit us in the US if they are ever in our neck of the woods! Also, Camille, our Hostess, was an absolute delight!! She presented the cheeses at each meal with a passion and artistry that was charming -- it was such a treat to have a local with us! She took her duties so very seriously and took such care with linens, flowers, cleaning, and presentation. We can still hear her wonderful accent and pronunciation of cheeses and wine, echoing in our ears. The deckhand, Rouri, who was training under Fred, was likewise so earnest and hardworking, but also a delight to get to know a bit. He, too will be a huge asset in any capacity, while already quite skilled at building and mechanics. He did a fine job of assisting in new duties while we were on board.

The physical plant reminded me of a boutique hotel, not fussy at all. The beds were wonderful!! The linens were really beautiful and felt great (I am a little picky about that!). The designers did a great job with all the gray tiled baths, too. While cruising, being able to view things off the deck in both directions was wonderful. The dining area and comfortable furniture on deck made it especially inviting. The scenery was beautiful!

Again, the crew helped make the trip what it was!! Joe deserves a medal for all of the experimenting he did. We would take another barge trip but would want him in the kitchen!! He really elevated our experience. As others have said, that trip along the Canal de Bourgogne, with all of the decisions made by Spencer and crew, is truly the most relaxing experience and ideal for folks burned out with the work world of the US."

Return to Rendez-Vous for lunch and an afternoon cruise to La Bussiere-sur-Ouche. This is the perfect time to walk on the towpath or explore by bicycle, or just sit on deck and absorb the gorgeous countryside as it floats gently by.

Wednesday: Moored in La Bussiere-sur-Ouche
Full Day Out in Beaune, Wine Capital of the Cote d’Or
Beaune is the unofficial capital of the Côte d'Or, with millions of bottles of wine stored in cellars beneath its cobblestoned streets.

Thursday: La- Bussiere- sur Ouche to Pont d’Ouche
A Chateau Perched High Over the Canal!
Cruise from La Bussiere to Pont d’Ouche in the morning. After lunch, we’ll visit the village of Chateauneuf-en-Auxois with its fairy tale castle perched high over the canal. Tour the castle as well as the village, with its delightful small crafts shops. Return for dinner on board.

Friday Pont d’Ouche to Vandenesse-en-Auxois
Vines and Wines

Your final cruise takes you through the river valley with its incredible greenery and scenery.  Now is the time to relax on deck, or explore the towpath lining the canal with one last gentle pedal or leisurely stroll. After lunch on board, enjoy a wine tour in the world-famous vineyards of the Cotes de Beaune with an escorted excursion to an authentic "Domaine Bourguignon". Discover a private wine cellar built in the 16th century by the Cistercien monks, and then sip, sample, and savor at a wine tasting.  Then return to the Rendez-Vous where Chef is crafting the Captain’s Dinner.

Saturday: Chauffeured Transfer Back to Paris
A Sad Farewell
Depart at 9:00 am for your return transfer back to the one location of your choice in central Paris, or alternatively, your entire group returning to Charles de Gaulle Airport. Estimated arrival time at both locations is 1:00 pm. Please make all travel plans on the basis of this timing. Breakfast is your last on board meal. We hope you enjoyed your cruise on Rendez-Vous.

Please note: this is a sample itinerary which may be subject to change depending on local conditions. The route will run in reverse on alternate weeks. Picture your Cruise on Rendez-Vous
