Roi Soleil

Barge Lady Ellen and Caroline (Director of Operations) visited Roi Soleil, here are their recaps:

Ellen says, "On the Canal du Midi, you’ll cruise on an idyllic waterway – under ancient stone bridges (And the Roi Soleil fits under – just!) – through vineyards and hills in the distance- and to markets and top area sightseeing. Even families looking for the ultimate summer vacation are welcome and cared for.

It was a thrill to return to Roi Soleil and to be reminded how gorgeous, classy and service-oriented this operation is. We were pleased that owner Guillaume de Perthuis came from Paris to join us. Also on board were such Canal du Midi veteran crew such as Captain Finnegan and Guide Rex. Both have done a great job for our guests.

Everything is quality here – starting with the design itself which is based on classic American yacht design from the 1920s – and which needless to say is different from anything else found on the French canals! The cabins abound with many designer touches: Classic French fabrics covering the walls, use of elegant hardwoods, high ceilings, perfect soundproofing, and spacious tiled baths. The sleek upper level is entirely open from front to back – guests relaxing in the salon can watch the captain navigate at one end and the chef plate dinners at the other. "Our open kitchen is perfect for cooking demonstrations and is the favorite spot for our guests to congregate,” noted Guillaume.

The sophistication continues in the menus, the caliber of the wines, the fine French china and flatware, and even in the barge’s very own champagne! Please go to the Menu section to learn about the divine dinner we enjoyed and to see other menus enjoyed b our guests. The crew is accessible but also totally service oriented. Sightseeing is planned on a bespoke basis for each charter group and personalized shopping, wine tasting and antiquing expeditions can be arranged - JUST ASK!!! We recommend Roi Soleil and hope to return soon.”

Caroline says, "Roi Soleil delivers class, luxury, and style. The salon, kitchen, and deck display a sleek and trendy look and feel, which also provide comfort and ample space. The numerous windows and skylights offer incredible panoramic views of the canal. An open air kitchen delights guests as they are encouraged to watch the chef and view the culinary magic that is happening. Perhaps the best part of Roi Soleil is the deck – the semi-circle white leather booth makes guests feel like a celebrity. After all, Roi Soleil is the known as a luxury motor yacht!

The cabins are incredibly spacious and elegantly decorated. Although the top floor is modern and sleek, the rooms take a different style and décor approach, with a bit of a classic French feel. There is also a large chest to store clothes and luggage, and additional storage underneath the bed. The bathrooms are equally as impressive as the rest of the barge.

The Roi Soleil crew have a topnotch reputation to live up to, and they do not disappoint. Sit back and relax on this upscale barge, and you will be the envy of every vessel that floats by!"

guests on canal du midi barge roi soleil

"The experience aboard the Roi Soleil was outstanding, one of the best cruises we have ever taken. The crew was outstanding. Captain Finn and Hostess Emily are a great team and were excellent at being the leaders and hosts. Chef Jodi is a marvel at what she can cook. Twice a day she put together terrific lunches and dinners. We were all amazed meal after meal at what Jodi could put together. Tour Guide Barry was an excellent companion and host. We really enjoyed the visits to the Abbey, Narbonne, and Minerve. We can ‘t say enough about all four of the crew -- their attitudes, knowledge, and professional manner were greatly appreciated. The cabin was quite spacious and very comfortable. The Barge Lady's services were excellent and very helpful, and pre-trip information was clear and complete. Our summation of the cruise was that was outstanding. We have already recommended it to one of our friends, and would be happy to recommend to others."

- Dick Clotfleter, cruised September, 2016

"Our time on the Roi Soleil was a wonderful experience we would recommend to anyone. We just can't say enough great things about the crew. Captain Finn and Hostess Emily are the perfect hosts. Tour Guide Barry was great, and Wee especially enjoyed the excursions to Minerve and Narbonne. Chef Jodi is a treasure -- her cuisine was superb!  Barge Lady services were very helpful, and everything was clear prior to our barge cruise."

- Rodger Fagerholm, cruised September, 2016

"The entire experience was fantastic. We expected a lot, and got more than expected. Our amazing crew ensured our experience was memorable and enjoyable in every sense. The cuisine was outstanding, we enjoyed all the excursions, and the cabins were very comfortable. The Barge Lady conveyed everything clearly and accurately. We absolutely would like to do it again."

- Paul Madera, cruised May, 2016

"This has been an exceptional experience. The crew took care of our every need with a seamless dance of expertise and hospitality. Our superb Tour Guide, Rex, was completely knowledgeable and passed his passion on to us all. Through the locks and on through this peaceful canal, our fantastic Captain, Finn, took us on unforgettable voyage of beauty. Damien, our Chef, was outstanding -- serving spectacular food in the most beautiful settings. The wine and cheese was fabulous and presented with a telling of its history and provenance our exceptional Hostess, Emily. We learned as we dined and imbibed. All our wishes and expectations were fulfilled, from blueberry pancakes to a sumptuous seafood feast. This trip has been like having Alain Ducaisse at each meal! Cabin was nicely spacious and comfortable. Washroom size exceeded our expectations. The Barge Lady did a great job on arranging on our travel arrangements for our return flight, and pre-trip information was clear and informative. One of the best holiday trips ever taken."

- David and Bonnie Goldstein, cruised September, 2015

"Our family of six floated down the Canal du Midi on this wonderful barge, leaving daily life far away as we were surrounded by beauty, history, and service beyond our wildest dreams. In an unobtrusive, professional, and warm manner, our every need was anticipated. The food and wine were memorable, the scenery beautiful, the sense of quietly moving through countryside at a leisurely pace gave us all a sense of peace, and the people who provided this experience were beyond compare. We will remember this barge trip forever."
