I’ve been planning barge cruises for guests since 1985.
Over time I have heard EVERY misconception
people have about barging.
Here are the Top 6 Barging Myths.
Sure, that is ONE type of barge, but we are talking about luxury hotel barges! Barge cruises are floating hotels that offer 6 night/7 day trips, the majority of which cruise in France, but also in Ireland, England, Holland/Belgium, Germany and Scotland. A hotel barge carries 22 passengers or less, most of them 12 or less. Barging is perfect for groups of couples, friends or families to arrange a private charter. These intimate barges cruise 50 miles a week, deep in the countryside.
Aboard a hotel barge, comfort and style are key! You will find nicely appointed cabins with private bathrooms and showers, salon and dining area, a sundeck perfect for sipping a glass of wine as the the scenery unfolds and an experienced crew to pamper! Barge crews are typically made up of a Captain, guide, hostess and your very own gourmet chef. Daily guided excursions are planned to local areas of interest. Barge cruising is for those who want to experience a small area in depth; who want to be totally relaxed; and are very interested in wine tasting and gourmet cuisine.
Myth 2: Barges cruise on rivers…FALSE!
95% of all barges cruise on man-made canals. These antique waterways were built in the 18th century and are petite waterways that cruise through the deep countryside. Canal cruising is what makes biking so easy with multiple locks along the way for guests to get on and off the vessel. The 8 passenger C’est la Vie in Northern Burgundy cruises on a canal and through dozens of locks.
Myth 3: Barges only offer small cabins with cramped quarters…FALSE! Many Ultra Deluxe vessels have cabins that are very spacious…think 200 square feet and BIGGER. Both 8 passenger charter barges Prosperite in Southern Burgundy and the Renaissance in the Upper Loire both boast 4 identical 270 square foot cabins. That is bigger than most hotel rooms!
There is always something to do, experience and see while barging.EVERYDAY, there is a guided and chauffeured EXCURSION to a point of interest along the canal. On the 6 passenger Burgundy barge Apres Tout, guests go jeeping in the vineyards! Other daily excursions include wine tasting, and visits to chateaux, colorful markets, historic churches and charming towns. Back on board, guests can BIKE or take a stroll at their leisure, RELAX and SOCIALIZE on the outdoor deck while absorbing the idyllic scenery, or visit the Captain in the wheelhouse and even STEER THE BARGE!
Myth 5: Children are not Welcome…FALSE!
Children and Babies are welcome on a CHARTER basis only.
Two and three generation family cruises are an increasing trend in barging. Private ambiance + a service oriented crew catering to every need makes this family vacation FUN AND EASY. Envision child size bikes, kid friendly food, and family oriented daily excursions. Baby paraphernalia can be arranged to be on board, if needed. The 6 passenger barge Elisabeth in Northern Burgundy and the 12 passenger barge Savoir Faire in Champagne and Northern Burgundy are terrific examples of barges that can accommodate families.
Myth 6: Couples cannot book a cabin on a sailing…FALSE!
