Panache

Barge Lady Stephanie Sack recently cruised on the Panache:

“It’s a tough job, but SOMEONE has to visit the luxury canal cruises of Europe on behalf of the Barge Lady! My latest fact-finding mission: to explore the experience aboard the Panache in Holland. My interest was piqued, my bags were packed, and off I went to the Netherlands. My time aboard Panache proved a real highlight of my Barge Lady travels, involving cultural explorations, friendly fellow guests, regionally-inspired cuisine– and even a spontaneous yoga class!

Stepping aboard the Panache, I felt as if I was entering the loveliest of modern homes. The inviting deck offered a large picnic table for drinks and meals al fresco, while the wonderful sight lines were perfect for taking in Holland’s living waterways. The comfortable salon and grand dining room were bright, chic, and contemporary, and my spacious cabin provided a haven of comfort. I loved the en-suite bathroom, boasting a double sink and full size shower with massage jets. Immediately I felt a sense of attentive professionalism from the crew, led by Captain Yolanda, a native of Holland with boundless energy and an equally engaging smile. Her dynamic crew of six made sure we were well looked after, starting with wonderful “Welcome Aboard” aperitifs and canapes. Here’s a picture of me and this fabulous crew.

My extraordinary day on the Panache began with a full breakfast buffet of granola, yoghurt, fruit, and cheese, supplemented with to-order scrambled eggs. Our day’s excursion to the only remaining Royal Delft pottery factory proved to be a fascinating glimpse into the past and future of this iconic Dutch industry. Watching the artists carefully hand-paint the famous blue hue onto pottery pieces was a true delight. After this marvelous visit, our afternoon of cruising highlighted why Holland has always been a special place for the Barge Ladies. Barging on the Dutch waterways is different from the French canals, but in some ways more interesting: Panache floated on active waterways brimming with everyday life! We cruised past homes, parks, and shops, all the while observing the Dutch people at work and play –- and many of them waving and smiling at me as they zipped by on their bikes!

I adored the on board cuisine, thanks to Chef Slowamir’s lunch and dinner inspired by global influences with a nod to Holland’s heritage flavors…the beer-braised lamb, for example, was rich with the taste of a local brew; the cheese board featured a Dutch selection; and locally-sourced pears were perfectly presented in a decadent dessert tart. Typical of the care taken aboard Panache, a darling handwritten menu was placed on the buffet before each meal! Speaking with Chef Slowamir, I learned that his overall cooking philosophy focuses on freshness first, with the understanding that only the best ingredients lead to the best tastes. He still loves to try new recipes and techniques; three years ago taught himself to bake his own bread, including a from-scratch sourdough using a homemade starter! He takes the most pride is seeing guests enjoy his meals, and considers being a barge Chef the PERFECT job.

The evening’s mooring in Leiden proved to be one of the most exciting happenings yet…while the Panache began its docking process, I spotted a yoga studio right on the canal not 100 meters away…and it was a Bikram yoga studio! I immediately gathered my yoga gear, excitedly informed the hostess I might be a bit late for dinner, and, as the sun set over the canal, I enjoyed a marvelously memorable hot yoga class -- in both English and Dutch! My fellow guests applauded as I came back on the boat, exuberant from my spontaneous efforts as a globe-trotting yogini.

For those looking to explore a culturally-rich cruising route outside of France, or for seasoned travelers interested in meeting other sophisticated sojourners, I enthusiastically recommend the Panache and its Dutch itinerary, and I cannot wait to return to Holland and the Panache!”

Picture a Tulip Time Cruise in Holland on Panache

sample cruise week on Panache barging in Holland

Panache Guest Book

"We took this barge cruise, our second with the Barge Lady, to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary and invited our daughter and son-in-law to join us. To say that we were all impressed with the service Barge Lady Stephanie provided would be a major understatement. To say that the cruise on the Panache was a cruise to remember would be an even greater understatement.

From Captain Arnault who headed up a fantastic crew and provided us with excursions that were always better than the last and ending up with the 'barge elevator' were more than could be expected. The Pilot, Bernard, seemed to 'thread the needle' going into and out of some very tight locks which showed quite a confidence, and well earned, of his skill. Anteo, as the Deckhand and part time chauffeur, was very helpful and always was smiling.

The female portion of the crew must have gone to smile school and graduated with honors. Hostesses Erell and Kim always had a smile whether it was asking if we wanted anything (which was rare as they always anticipated everything) or giving their vast knowledge of the various cheeses or wines we were going to have for lunch or dinner each day. They never seemed to be around unless you needed something and then they were immediately there and quickly provided it.

And last, but certainly not least, was Chris the Chef. My family can attest to the fact that I am not an adventurous eater who does not easily like straying very far beyond beef and potatoes. He, however, exposed me to the joys of having well prepared and deliciously served dishes of guinea fowl, poached ocean trout, and duck. He did excel on the fillet of beef we had on the last day of the cruise. He also exposed me to the world beyond American and cottage cheeses, as I never realized they could be that good.

A special thanks also to Chef Chris for the raspberry and white chocolate cheese cake he prepared for a special anniversary party that the crew arranged mid week during our cruise. Although I knew something was up as Captain Arnault kept dropping hints that something was going to happen I never expected a cake that was that delicious. I can't recall ever tasting a cake that good. It will always be a special memory. Would love to have THAT recipe!

Highly recommend the Panache if you have never barged and recommend it strongly if you have barged before. It is a very comfortable barge with lots of room in the cabins and know it will leave you with many fond memories of pleasant cruising, fine wines, delicious cheeses, and memorable meals."

- Ken McIntosh, cruised September, 2016

"WOW -- what an amazing time we had! Bob and I have decided we are going to become regular barge travelers. I’d expected to have a good time -- but the experience far exceeded my expectations.

I cannot say enough about the crew. Our Captain, Arnault, went out of his way to anticipate anything anyone might need. He did a great job organizing a special celebration for my parent’s 50th anniversary which was much appreciated. Before you could even think of something you might want, he was already putting it into place. He was very well informed on what we would be seeing and the organization of everything was totally seamless.

Hostesses Erell and Kim were DELIGHTFUL. Both very charming young women with lots of knowledge of cheese and wine. They made sure we had everything we needed. The Deckhand, Antio, was charming and always had something to discuss. Bernard the Pilot was very skilled, handling the twists and turns with nary a bump. And Chris -- the Chef! I wanted to put him in my suitcase and take him home. The cuisine on the cruise was amazing. I begged Chris to make a Panache cookbook! Not only were the meals fantastic, but they also were just the right portions, never leaving us stuffed. The pairings with the wine worked really well. This is a cruise for foodies!

We enjoyed all the excursions. If I had to choose a favorite it would have been either the elevator that took the boat up (does that count as an excursion if we were still on the boat?) or the trip to the Strasbourg hospital with its winery. One thing we adored is how every day there was time to enjoy the barge as we saw fit. We could sit and relax, but we often took the bikes out or took a walk.

The cabin on the Panche exceeded our expectations. The space was well laid out -- and with a double sink in the bathroom! I was also really impressed with how clean the crew kept everything and how tiny details, such as a water bottle on each nightstand every day (both sparkling and still no less) meant nothing was over looked. Everything was very clear prior to our barge cruise thanks to the services the Barge Ladies provided. A dream vacation that we are keen to do again!"

- Eileen Cook, cruised September, 2016

"Our cruise on the Panache could not have been better. Everyone in the crew was professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. Captain Arnault was perfect, and we loved having a Frenchman heading the barge. Cuisine was exceptional. We enjoyed all of the excursions. Cabins were lovely -- comfy bed, plenty of hot water, enough storage space. Barge Lady services were truly excellent. It was a lovely trip, and I cannot think of a thing that wasn’t perfect."

- Bev Miller, cruised September, 2016

"We’ve now experienced the complete cruise spectrum, including ocean cruises, river cruises, and finally to canal cruises. Unquestionably the canal cruise on the Panache was our best experience. The Panache is an intimate, floating boutique hotel with great accommodations, terrific cuisine, and anticipatory service. The pace is wonderful and every bend of the canal brings a new experience. Our Captain had scouted the route so was able to constantly surprise us with delightful experiences. This is the way to see Europe!"

- Bob and Margaret Seidler, cruised July, 2016

"Cheryl and I enjoyed every aspect of the cruise on the Panache. The cabin was comfortable, the crew exceptional, and Captain Arnault was sensational and very caring and responded to every whim and request we made. The meals was tasty and imaginatively prepared by Chef Chris, and the excursions to the Meteor Brewery, the Domaine Pfister winery, and Lalique Museum were highlights. The printed material your office provided beforehand was very helpful as well. Thanks again for the personal, caring service that you provide."

- James Gillespie, cruised July, 2016
