Saroche Cruises in Burgundy France

Barge Lady’s Kelly had lunch on Saroche with Dawn and Jason in August of 2015.

Captain Jason Ashcroft and Chef Dawn Coles have long been one of our favorite “barging couples.” We have gotten to know them very well with their first barge, the Who Knows, which they operated successfully in Champagne and Burgundy for many years. As personalities, they complement each other perfectly and to the great benefit of their guests. As professionals, they bring a quality background in the hotel restaurant and barging industries. Dawn is a trained chef with a hotel and catering degree. Jason, also a chef with a deep knowledge of wine, trained at the prestigious Ecole de Hotelerie in Switzerland and has worked at the Connaught in London and Bar au Lac in Zurich.

Now they have purchased Saroche, a Deluxe-rated six passenger vessel which is a perfect fit for their talent and ambition. Saroche offers space and modern amenities, with its unique split level salon and dining area; large cabins with lovely tiled baths; and deck with hot tub. They plan to operate Saroche on a familiar and successful schedule: the Champagne region in the spring and early summer, and then transition to Burgundy for late summer and fall.

Southern Burgundy, with its famed vineyards and beautiful vistas, is located a few hours south-east of Paris. Historic Beaune, wine tasting in the renowned Cote d’Or, as well as some of the most picturesque scenery in the French countryside along the Canal de Bourgogne encompass the charm of this wonderful route.

Jason will continue his role as captain and guide. As a guide, Jason brings to the forefront his interest in history and winemaking. Dawn will continue as chef and now has the fabulous and well-equipped Saroche kitchen to showcase her refined and delicious cuisine. We always look forward to dining with Dawn! Check out Kelly's blog on her recent lunch aboard Saroche - complete with Dawn's delicious Quiche Lorraine recipe! Jason and Dawn will be assisted by two in crew.

Saroche Burgundy Cruise Itinerary

escomme to gissey sur ouche On thecanal de bourgogne

Sunday Paris to Escommes
Welcome Aboard!
A member of Saroche crew will meet your party at one hotel of your party’s choice in central Paris and chauffeur you to Saroche moored on the Canal de Bourgogne at Escommes. Enjoy a champagne reception and plenty of time to settle in before Dawn, your personal Chef, presents you with the first of many gourmet meals.

Monday: Escommes to Chateauneuf en Auxois
Taste the Sweet Flavors of France at a Boutique Chocolatier
Today's cruise takes you down the flight of locks from the summit pond to the foot of beautiful Chateauneuf en Auxois. Following a leisurely lunch, Jason will take you to a boutique chocolatier for a delightful tasting of France’s most decadently delicious specialty! With both lunch and dinner aboard today, relax and enjoy life at its best on the placid canals of Southern Burgundy.

Tuesday: Chateuneuf en Auxois to Pont d'Ouche
Visit a 12th Century Chateau
After breakfast, Jason will chauffeur you to the quaint village of Chateauneuf en Auxois. This 12th century Chateau is a famous landmark in the area, harboring many fascinating secrets of European history. After a tour of the Chateau, there is time to explore the village before returning to the barge for lunch. In the afternoon, we set sail and head down stream to Pont d'Ouche, our mooring for the evening. The canal’s towpath is the perfect avenue for a stroll or cycle, or perhaps just enjoy the relaxed pace of life from the Saroche deck. Once moored up, Chef Dawn will once again regale you with another gourmet feast.

Wednesday: Pont d'Ouche to Veuvey-sur-Ouche
Day Out in Beaune – with Lunch at a Gourmet Auberge and Wine Tasting!
Today we leave the Saroche and head over the hills to Beaune, the region’s unofficial wine capital. Jason will lead a guided tour of the Hospice de Beaune -- as famous for its premium wines as it is for its colorfully tiled roof! Today’s lunch is taken at a gourmet auberge in Beaune. After lunch, Jason will escort you into the Cote de Beaune, which is known for its soft reds and complex delectable whites. A walk in the vines and an explanation of why Burgundy wines are so well renowned await, and then, best of all, there is a comprehensive tasting in a private winery. Return to the Saroche for a sundown cruise before light dinner on board.

Thursday: Vuevey-sur-Ouche to La Bussiere
Wine tasting in the Cote d’Or
After breakfast we set sail and cruise down to La Bussiere, with plenty of gentle towpath available for those who wish to walk or cycle. Lunch is on board the Saroche. In the afternoon, Jason will drive you into the Cote de Nuits for a visit to Chateau Clos de Vougeot, an 12th century Cistercian monastic winery, home to the Chevaliers du Tastevin, the fraternity of Knights of the Wine-Tasting Cup, committed to preserving and promoting fine Burgundian wines. Afterwards, proceed to a nearby village for a sampling of local vintages. The Cote du Nuit is famous for its reds, and Jason will show you why the world raves about its Pinot Noir.

Friday: La Bussiere to Gissey
Market Day in Dijon!
Market Day! Dijon is the capital of the region, and once home to the four Dukes of Burgundy. Gustaf Eiffel, another resident, designed the city’s iconic covered market square. After a walking tour of the old town, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the market’s local produce stalls or explore the classic French shops of Dijon. We return to Saroche for lunch before setting sail for Gissey, our marquee destination for the week. This beautiful village nestled in the heart of the Ouche valley is classically French and no trip would be complete without a special visit. Tonight, Jason will be your host for the Captain’s Dinner, at which Chef Dawn will round out your culinary experience with yet another gourmet delight.

Saturday: Gissey to Paris
A Sad Farewell
Enjoy a final breakfast on board before your chauffeur driven minibus picks you up and takes you back to Paris with time to reflect on the fabulous week aboard Saroche.

Saroche Sample Menus

We were delighted to be lunching on deck with Dawn, Jason, and a party of friends and family. Dawn served one of the most refined and delicious meals we've ever had. Dawn explained that her mother was a professional chef; she grew up cooking alongside. "Mum didn't use cookbooks. She had natural talent and just tasted and altered," said Dawn.  The talk turned to wine. Jason loves wine and can offer a special tasting of 17 wines! We were happy to be at Jason and Dawn's table - and hope to return soon for more delicious cuisine and spirited conversation.

Saroche Guest Book

"Highly recommended. The crew was knowledgeable, hospitable, and very professional, and their knowledge of wine, food, Champagne, region and war history was uniformly outstanding. The sightseeing of the military history areas was a major moment for me, and the winery tours were excellent. Chef Dawn's cuisine was great and varied. We especially enjoyed her appetizers! Cabins were very nice and spacious. Working with the Barge Ladies was straightforward and easy."

- Paul Rusnock, cruised June, 2016

"A great barge with an even greater crew! All we expected and more. Everything about our barge experience was enjoyable and memorable. Captain Jason is a natural, offering just right amount of local information without being too intrusive. Chef Dawn never prepared a bad meal but rather kept variety, tastefulness, and wine pairing at maximum deliciousness. The fresh bakery goods and breads were wonderful. Jason's wine knowledge and selections coupled with Dawn's excellent food could not have been better. Jason's nightly 'bubbles du jour' was a daily highlight. We enjoyed meeting local champagnois, seeing the countryside, and visiting World War I and II historical sights. Tour Guide John and Hostess Alisa were always attentive and helpful. Cabins were clean, comfortable, well-lighted, and attractive. The pre-trip information provided by the Barge Ladies was very good. Our trip was truly memorable. We already want to cruise again with Jason and Dawn!"

Captain Jason and Chef Dawn earned raves on their first barge, the Who Knows.

We know that guests on the Saroche will be just as happy!

"We had a wonderful week on the Who Knows barge, thanks to the extraordinary Jason and Dawn. As you well know, the food was fabulous (both on the barge and off), we enjoyed outstanding visits to Burgundy towns and wine tastings with Jason and, of course, everything was kept immaculately clean. We learned that we will be among the last groups of guests with Jason and Dawn on Who Knows -- we even passed their new hotel barge on the canal. Our trip on the Burgundy Canal was a week we will long remember!! We greatly appreciate your help in making our vacation such a success!!! I will not hesitate to recommend the Barge Lady for anyone who is interested in barge cruising."

"Our experience on Who Knows was the trip of a lifetime! Jason and Dawn are the quintessential hosts, and they could not have been better. Everything was perfect -– the food, the wine, the excursions, the ambiance. With Dawn’s cooking, we felt like we were eating in a gourmet restaurant every meal. Each excursion was thoughtfully planned and flawlessly executed. Jason’s knowledge of the background for each excursion was tremendous added value. There was nothing to like least –it was all wonderful. The services of The Barge Lady were very good with friendly service -- very prompt and accommodating. Really, we think Barge Lady is fabulous and have already recommended you to a number of friends and folks we met while traveling."
