Shannon Princess Family Cruise in Ireland

We at The Barge Lady have known Shannon Princess owners Captain Ruairi Gibbons and Chef Olivia Power for many years – and have watched them mature from newly married couple introducing their traditional Irish vessel to seasoned operators on the modern barge they designed and which showcases their ideas about what constitutes authentic luxury on the waterways of Ireland. Ruairi’s background in boating and Olivia’s in cuisine provided the perfect matchup of talents. Along the way, they became parents to son Ross, raised on the Shannon Princess and now sixteen years old. All of these experiences have prepared the Gibbons family to offer a cruise which combines fun, floating, food – and the warmest of Irish welcomes from their family to yours.

As Captain Ruairi says: “While the mood on board is informal, friendly and relaxed, our barge family will go out of its way to provide local knowledge and Irish hospitality – while attending to our guests’ ever wish. All of us enjoy adding that pinch of MAGIC DUST to memories that will make guests smile long after they have left Shannon Princes. Our crew, who are Irish, are chosen to join the Shannon Princess family because of their education, friendly personalities and stellar attitude to customer service.”

The Shannon Princess Family Cruise can be custom designed to include lots of active adventures, such as horseback riding, zip lining, water sports, golf, and go carting? Want to visit a haunted castle? Experience the awe inspiring Cliffs of Moher? Listen to traditional Irish music in the local pub? Take a guided bike ride through the byways and villages off the river? Hire a ghillie and go fly fishing? The choice is always YOURS – and the idea is to keep the family entertained and educated.

And the food!!! Chef Olivia trained at the famous Ballymaloe Cookery School, famed for saving and updating classic Irish cuisine. Olivia bakes her own breads and desserts and forages along the route for wild ingredients that set off her homemade creations. As Olivia says: “Our menus are created around how your family would like to eat.” Join Olivia in the kitchen for a hands-on experience in creating baked goods and special butters. Picnics on shore and barbeques on deck will wow your family – as well as scrumptious breakfasts, extensive luncheon buffets and elegant dinners.

New for 2016 is a complete renovation of the Shannon Princess interior. (The very popular hot tub was added to the deck in 2014.) Ruairi and Olivia will update everything but continue their successful “take” on contemporary luxury which blends hardwoods, antiques, pieces by local artisans and Irish craftsmanship.

Explore on Shore with Bicycles and a Picnic Lunch….Or…..
We moor right at Clonmacnoise, the ruins of an ancient monastery. Founded by St Ciaran in the mid-6th century, in the time of the so-called Dark Ages, it became a great center of religion and learning, visited by scholars from all over the world. Alternatively, we can provide a picnic lunch, bicycles, and your own guide for a cycle through rural byways and villages. Rejoin the barge later today at her overnight moorings in Shannonbridge. For the non-cyclists, there is a choice of ghost hunting at Leap Castle, Ireland’s most haunted castle, or visit to award winning Mossfield Farm for a demonstration of organic farming & Cheese making. The Cliffs are 214m high at the highest point and range for 8 kilometers over the Atlantic Ocean on the western seaboard of County Clare. Whether it be the cliffs themselves carved by time, ocean and weather into fantastic shapes and formations, the mighty Atlantic ocean or the birds, plants and other wildlife that inhabit the cliffs and the sea, there are plenty of natural wonders to enjoy here.

Flying Boats? Visit a Museum Showcasing the Earliest TransAtlantic Flights!
Cruise through gorgeous lakeside scenery to Killaloe, a delightful village and the last mooring of your cruise. Then visit the Foynes Flying Boat Museum, which captures perfectly the romantic era of the first TransAtlantic passenger flights made by what was known then as “flying boats.” Pan-Am Airlines commissioned Charles Lindbergh, who had made the first solo flight to Europe in 1927, to find a suitable base for their flying boat service from New York to Ireland. Foynes on the Shannon Estuary was chosen as the nearest European landfall. Decades later, this location turned out to be of strategic importance as a back door into Europe during World War II. Upon your return, we can arrange a fishing Ghillie (at your expense) for lake /fly fishing. Relive the entire family adventure at tonight’s super-special Farewell Dinner.

Saturday, Day 7: Chauffeured Transfer back to Dublin

Captain Gibbons wants your family to have fun! Other activities can be added or substituted, such as a Master Class is traditional Irish music, visit to a crafts maker, zip lining, water skiing, go-cart racing or golf!

Please Note: On alternate weeks the cruise will be in the reverse direction. This is a sample itinerary to explain how our normal itinerary may be customized for our younger guests. This itinerary is subject to change. Thank you for booking your cruise with The Barge Lady, we look forward to welcoming you on board again soon!

Shannon Princess Guest Book

"Ruairi, Olivia and thier crew are lovely people and we enjoyed spending the week with them. We felt like we really got to know them because we were such a small group. They are the nicest family, and the two girls who work for them were wonderful. Olivia's cuisine was excellent, as good if not better that a 5 star restaurant. Can't wait until Olivia sends some of her recipes. We think she should write a cookbook. We had the pleasure of visiting a castle, where the owner entertained us with his music, and we loved our visit to the cheese farm. The cabin was very good, the bed and pillows were comfortable. The crew could not have been more attentive. Anything we wanted or needed was done."

- Marla Gitig, Cruised August, 2016

"Wow! The cruise aboard the Shannon Princess was amazing. Well beyond what we expected. The barge was so perfect. The owners of the barge treated us like celebrities! Olivia is a master Chef, and the cuisine was that of a gourmet dining tour. Please recommend to anyone looking for lovely accommodations, great scenery, terrific food, and beautiful, charming cities. I hope to take my boys someday soon on this experience. Thanks again. Looking forward to the next adventure."

Rochelle S. and Jeffrey S, cruised July, 2016

"There are no words to express our gratitude on the way we were treated on our cruise with Captain Ruairi, Chef Olivia, and the rest of the Shannon Princess crew. It was over the top, and we are already highly recommending this trip to everyone we see. Thanks again."

Michael and Bobbie B., cruised July, 2016

"This cruise on the Shannon Princess was truly enjoyable. The crew was FABULOUS! Everyone was so friendly couldn't do enough for us. Cuisine was perfect! Olivia is a fantastic Chef. Each meal was better than the next! We really enjoyed the excursions, and enjoyed meeting the other guests, who were lovely. We didn't want to leave! The pre-trip information was perfect, and we followed all the suggestions given. We have already recommended to several people that they contact you for amazing trips. Each cruise we have booked with you has been incredible!"

- Sue Meltzer, cruised June, 2016 (repeat Barge Lady guest)

"Our time on the Shannon Princess was over the top. Captain Ruiari and Chef Olivia are awesome. Olivia's cuisine was the best of the five cruises we have taken! Our cabin was excellent. Barge Lady services were excellent as usual. Barge cruising -- it just keeps getting better..."

- Al and Lura Granger, cruised May, 2016 (repeat Barge Lady guests)

"Everything about the cruise aboard the Shannon Princess was top-notch. We had a wonderful time. The efforts of Captain Ruairi and Chef Olivia made for a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Olivia's cuisine was excellent, the cabins were very comfortable, and everything ran like clockwork. Our fellow travelers, who we didn't know in advance, formed a very compatible group. There were two retired four-star generals and their wives, a retired cruise director and his wife, and a hotel owner from Pennsylvania and his wife. Rather than go on at length, suffice it to say that you could feel very confident in recommending this to anyone expressing an interest in visiting Ireland. Thanks for your help in setting this up. We couldn't have done it without you."
