Alouette

The Barge Lady's daughter, Caroline Sack Klein (Director of Operations) visited the Alouette. Caroline says:

"On my visit to the barges of Belmond (formerly known as Orient Express) in Burgundy, I was delightfully surprised to board Alouette, a vessel that we have not seen in many years. Never have I experienced such love at first sight! I had found my ‘barge soul mate'! Alouette exudes comfort and airy charm, with a soft color scheme of blue, yellow and cream uniting all of the interior areas. The light-filled salon invited you to relax, while the cabins beckoned with elegant bedding and perfectly matched pillows. Cooking demonstrations are offered in the unusually large kitchen. This pretty barge feels different from anything else offered on the canals. I hope to return soon to my beloved Alouette!”
French barge Alouette's salon

Ellen, The Barge Lady says, "Alouette was gutted and rebuilt in 2008. We upgraded the rating to Ultra-Deluxe at this time. The barge now carries just four guests in ultimate comfort and style. Belmond (formerly known as Orient Express) kept the classic lines of the exterior with its large deck but refitted the interior in a modern French country style and added many amenities. The big and beautiful staterooms are connected to the crew by an in-house phone system. Hand cut local tiles line the beautiful baths.

The itinerary on the Canal du Midi takes in the major sights and adds the reassurance of the top Orient Express operation. There are many opportunities to walk or bicycle on the towpaths on this canal - which many consider to be the most beautiful in France. I want to visit Alouette – WITH Caroline, of course!"

On the way back to the boat we stop off at local wine producer for a tasting. Go to Market with the Chef!
Narbonne market visit on Languedoc cruise AlouetteThis morning, experience the wonderful covered market in Narbonne, pictured at right, with the chef and help choose what is on the menu for dinner! Enjoy lunch at a bistro just in front of the market and then return to the barge for an afternoon's cruise to the port at Homps.

Thursday -Visit Minerve, Cruise to Trebes
Taste Wine – After All, You are in France!

Return to the barge for lunch and then enjoy the ever changing views from the comfort of the deck, or perhaps walk or cycle along the tow path. Tonight we moor in the pretty town of Trebes.

France cruises on the Cana du Midi on barge Alouette

Alouette Guest Book

"Without doubt, one of the most interesting trips we have ever taken. The crew were the icing on the cake -- delightful, talented, knowledgeable, and charming. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and their cheery manner made our trip that extra special. Joe, our Chef, went far beyond our wildest expectations. Wow wow WOW! His food was creative, with exquisite flavors, and of course beautifully presented. Better than any restaurant we experienced in Paris. Our Tour Guide, Olivia, had an archaeological background that made our visits to cultural places of interest especially fascinating, and if that wasn't enough, she was our sommelier, taking us through the wines of the region. Her enthusiasm for her subjects was infectious and made very excursion an adventure! Our cabin was roomy and extremely comfortable, beautifully designed, and air conditioned. Barge Lady services were efficient, and the attention to every detail was faultless. Our cruise was perfect in every detail!"

- Stanley Baines, cruised August, 2016

"For us it was a trip of a lifetime. Crew was absolutely marvelous. From the driver that picked us up at the hotel to the train station liaison to meeting the crew, everyone was cheerful and helpful, clearly keeping our comfort and experience in mind. Each one endeared themselves to us in their own unique way and by the end of the trip we felt we had four new friends. They made every effort to assure we were having a wonderful experience.

Captain Julian is very professional. Always a smile and a wave! He is passionate about piloting the Alouette and takes great pride in and care of his boat. It is remarkable how he fit through those tight spaces with ease! He is a master at his craft. Hostess Martina was forever smiling and cheerful. She paid attention to our preferences and make them readily available without asking. Her attention to detail and creativity are assets to the Alouette. She is a joy.

Tour Guide Olivia is very knowledgeable and made the excursions very interesting. She was flexible, accommodating, and cheerful and easily made changes to go in any direction that interested us. An absolute pleasure to be with. Olivia seems to know EVERYONE EVERYWHERE and they made you feel like a friend by association. I particularly enjoyed the personal attention at all of the sites. Access to the church in Minerve along with Olivia’s knowledge of the history made that excursion special. The wine tasting with Francios Gimie was an exceptional experience. He is extremely kind and shared his passion for winemaking in a generous and genuine manner. An unforgettable experience.

Joe is an amazing Chef. Every meal was delicious and beautifully presented. I was particularly impressed with market day when everything we selected was prepared in the manner we suggested and was delicious. He could not have routine recipes for those things….he had no idea what we would select and yet produced an amazing meal. (I just might be in love with Joe….or at the least , would like to take him home.) It was also very interesting to taste the local wines and cheeses. Every evening was a party.

It was an unforgettable experience that we will be talking about for a very, very long time. (Probably to the dismay of all of our friends!) Truly relaxing….we travel quite a bit, but don’t relax much….this was truly relaxing. The whole week flowed from one extraordinary experience to another. Kudos to the Barge Lady! Everything was well thought out and the information provided was detailed and clear. We have already recommended you to many friends! I don’t know that we would ever attempt to re-create the magic of this trip, but if we did, you’ll be our first call."

- Sam and Pam Magare, cruised May, 2016

"Our group has nothing but good things to say about Alouette. The crew, the boat, the experience -- everything was wonderful. Probably the best vacation we have ever had! Great people and great trip."

Jim M., cruised, May, 2016

"Our barge cruise was special, memorable, and exceptional even for experienced world travellers. I cannot imagine having a better crew. The Captain was skilled and genial, the Chef truly talented, and Tour Guide was outstanding. We fell in love with them all! Food was world class: French, light, beautifully prepared -- perfect for gourmands. We especially enjoyed our visits to Carcassone and the market. Thank you!"

- Stan Morris, cruised May, 2015

"Crew was a dream team! Fantastic, very polite, friendly, helpful. They are the best! We enjoyed all daily excursions. The best ones were the visit to Minerve, truffle degustation at a farm, and lunch in the market. The visit to Pénzenas was also nice, and the Carassonne castle was fantastic. Cuisine was Michelin-starred level, delicious and amazing. I recommend the Alouette to everybody who likes eating and drinking and visiting amazing sightseeing!"
