Prosperite

Prosperite debuted in 2003, with Spencer and Rejane Hayes (pictured at right) operating the barge from the beginning, along with their seasoned crew. Spencer and Rejane are the most experienced, competent, accommodating, and charming couple in barging, each having been in the industry since 1993 and 1991, respectively. This dynamic couple have established longstanding relationships in the Burgundy area, and are well connected to local sommeliers, working artisans, and prominent community members. Spencer and Rejane now manage and supervise Prosperite, and its sister barge, “Rendez-Vous”, from behind the scenes. They are involved on a daily basis of the hiring/training of the crew, selecting the on board wine cellar, coordinating the most unique and personalized daily excursions, and ultimately assuring that the overall experience is seamless and flawless for the lucky Prosperite guests.

Speaking of lucky guests, passengers benefit from the fact that Prosperite is owned and was designed by a hands-on- American Hotelier who ensured that the vessel reflected the best of modern living, relaxed socializing, and lively entertaining. Prosperite’s welcoming open kitchen is the unique heart of the onboard experience, allowing everyone to congregate there and pull up a chair for an informal cooking demo. Dining and drinking is always a convivial affair, with lavish breakfast buffets, light luncheons, sumptuous cheese platters, decadent dinners, and, of course, freely flowing wines. The “open refrigerator” policy encourages guests to grab a snack or beverage 24 hours a day, and the canopied outdoor deck invites guests to enjoy the weather and meals outside while being in the shade. Don’t forget your bathing suit, and you can savor a glass of champagne while lounging in the hot tub!

Luxurious accommodations, top service oriented crew, and culturally-rich activities are the hallmarks of the Prosperite’s concept. The four, identical , 270 square-foot cabins are the biggest in barging (and even larger than some Paris hotel rooms!), and equally reflect contemporary design standards with a roomy reading corner, large beds which can be configured as one King or two Twins, and spacious bathrooms with both a shower stall and a tub. Stunning decor in the upstairs salon and the separate dining area is “casual chic”, combining classic Italian leather couches with accent pieces both antique and modern. The daily excursions spotlight the best of the Burgundian lifestyle, and includes private wine tastings, guided visits to places of historical interest, bustling local markets, and an onshore dinner at the Michelin-starred Abbaye de la Bussiere, which is located within walking distance of the canal.

Over the years, our guests have given Prosperite glowing reviews, and continue to do so. With its commitment to the most luxurious experiences, seasoned service, and ultra-deluxe accommodations, the Barge Ladies agree that Prospérité provides great value in the Ultra-Deluxe category.

Prosperite Burgundy Barge Cruise Itinerary

PLOMBIERES-les-DIJON to VANDENESSE-en-AUXOIS on the Canal de Bourgogne

Timeless cruising on tree-lined canals... Winetasting in the Cote d'Or... Personalities of Burgundy... Hospice de Beaune... An idyllically beautiful route!

Sunday: Paris to Plombieres-les-Dijon
Private Chauffeured Transfer -- Of Course!
A member of Prosperite crew will meet your party at one pickup location in central Paris at 2:00 pm or, alternatively, one pickup location in Dijon, Beaune, or the immediate Cote d’Or area at 4:00 pm and then chauffeur you via Mercedes Minivan to the barge, at anchor in in the petite port of Plombieres-les-Dijon, located just outside the larger town of Dijon. You'll be welcomed by the traditional champagne reception, and enjoy the first of many gourmet dinners on board. Tonight we stay in Plombieres-les-Dijon.

Monday: Plombieres-les-Dijon to Fleury-sur-Ouche
Where Medieval Monks Made Wine
Prospérité heads onto the Burgundy Canal for a tranquil morning cruise. Prospérité will go through the first of many locks. After lunch, devote the afternoon to an introduction to the Cote d'Or wine region lying south of the canal. First, we'll drive among the vineyards and villages of the "Route des Grand Crus" on the way to Clos de Vougeot, pictured above, a 12th century chateau where Cistercian monks learned the art of winemaking. Explore the ancient wine presses and soak in the ambiance of this elegant chateau surrounded by vineyards. Then it is back to Prospérité, now moored in Fleurey-sur-Ouche.

Tuesday: Fleury-sur-Ouche to Gissey-sur-Ouche
Join the Locals at the Dijon Market
This morning we'll drive  to Dijon for a morning devoted to this lovely town. First, walk the historic district, with its colorful tiled rooftop buildings, and then stop at the Covered Food Market, which was designed by Eiffel of Tower fame! A vast selection of produce, fish, cheeses, breads, baked goods and prepared delicacies brings this bustling market to life. There will be time to browse in tiny shops lining the cobblestoned streets, too. Then its back to Prospérité for lunch and an afternoon cruise to Gissey-sur-Ouche. On the way, what about getting out our bicycles for a meander on the towpath and into a village or two. Dinner on board ends this wonderful day.

Wednesday: Gissey-sur-Ouche to La Bussiere-sur-Ouche
Dinner at a Michelin-Starred Restaurant
A short morning cruise to Le Bussiere-sur-Ouche begins this eventful day. After lunch, we visit the adorable village of Chateauneuf-en-Auxois perched high on a hill overlooking the canal. Here is an enchanting old chateau -- very simple but with history and ghosts around every corner. Then walk the cobblestoned streets of the village; perhaps one of the craft ships is open. Then it's back to Prospérité where there will be time to prepare for dinner at Abbaye de la Bussiere, a former Cistercian Abbey now immaculately restored into a hotel and Michelin-starred restaurant. Pictured below are Prosperite guests dining at Abbaye de la Bussiere.

Thursday: La Bussiere-sur-Ouche to Pont d'Ouche
Medieval Hospice in Beaune -- Plus Shopping!
This morning, cruise deeper into the Ouche Valley to Pont D'Ouche. This is a great time to walk, bicycle or sit on deck and watch scenes of great beauty float by. After lunch, it's back into the Mercedes Minivan for a cruise high point: An excursion to Beaune. This enchanting town is the wine capital of Cote d' Or: Underneath its streets lie hundreds of miles of wine cellars. Visit the 15th-century hospital Hotel Dieu; (pictured above left) it is gorgeously preserved and provides a unique glimpse of life in the Middle Ages. There may be time for an impromptu winetasting, browse the shops, or enjoy a cafe in the square. Then it's back to Prospérité to re-live the day at dinner on-board.

Friday: Pont d'Ouche to Vandenesse-en-Auxois
You've tasted the Cheese...Now taste the Wine for an Ultimate French Experience!
Our final morning cruise takes Prospérité to Vandenesse-en-Auxois. Take a last, long morning to relax! Then, it's back to the Cote d' Or vineyards, passing through colorful villages on the way to a cellar tour/winetasting at Domaine Prieur-Brunet in Santenay. Return to your barge -- now your home away from home -- for cocktails and the festive Captain's Dinner. End your Prospérité cruise in style!

Barge cruise in Burgundy France on Prosperite

Prosperite Guest Book

"We had the most fabulous time on our excursion through Burgundy while aboard the Prosperite! The barge was 'over the top' and the crew were marvelous. Frankly, there are no superlatives that can describe the experience!"

- Dr. Bonnie Berman, cruised September, 2016

"The cruise aboard the Prosperite far exceeded our expectations. We would highly recommend it to anyone! We can't say enough about the crew! They were amazingly friendly, efficient, hardworking, charming, and knowledgeable. We felt like we had new friends instantly and were made to feel at home the minute we set foot on the barge.  Herve is an incredible Chef. His preparation is top notch! The quality of the food, presentation, and explanation were exceptional. His humor was enjoyed by our group as well! Tour Guide Rejane's historical knowledge of the area was a wonderful surprise and added so much to the excursions. We felt we learned so much about the Burgundy region. She is a charming tour guide who imparts her love of France in a pleasing and engaging way. The cabin was spacious, well appointed, and immaculately maintained by the Hostesses, Eve and Samantha. The bathrooms were a wonderful surprise with plenty of space and nice amenities. The Barge Lady offered efficient and thorough services, and the pre-trip information was complete and helpful."

- Ann Windley, cruised August, 2016

"Our time on the Prosperite was outstanding every way! There were six crew members aboard, including the Captain, all of whom were focused on us having the most comfortable and pleasant trip possible. By the end of the trip we felt we had become great friends with all of them, and were so grateful for all their TLC throughout the cruise. The Chef's meals were not only delicious, but were works of art as well. He was very happy to have us watch him with his preparations, and enjoyed doing demonstrations for us at any time. The sightseeing excursions were very interesting, and we loved the Tour Guide, who was very knowledgeable, charming, and fun to be with. Our cabin was lovely. The bed linens were very luxurious, as were the towels in our large bathroom - containing both a shower and a bath tub. Toiletries and fresh bottles of water were re-stocked daily. A 5-star experience all around!"

- Susan Dana, cruised August, 2016

"From cast off to final mooring, our cruise was absolute heaven. The crew was absolutely OUTSTANDING!! They were a delight to be around, attentive without being obtrusive, efficient, patient, so composed, flexible, and knowledegable. They offered help at every turn, and all so good-natured. Always a smile at any hour. I hope they enjoyed us as much as we enjoyed them. Tour Guide Michael was wonderful -- very informative and flexible. We enjoyed the sightseeing excursions, and felt the rides to various destinations were a good length and timed well with variation of departure times.

The cuisine you ask….??  Each meal a creative feast for the eye and taste bud. Beautifully prepared, presented, and described. And always served in a lovely manner. Chef Herve went above and beyond making cakes for the two anniversaries, and a special dessert at one of our lunches. I think he enjoyed our group as he interacted more and more every day. What a sense of humor. We loved our cooking demonstration!!! And those cheeses…amazing. The crew was so very knowledegable, we were all impressed. I was delighted to have the sheets at the end describing the meals and cheeses…and those wines!!!! Truly a creative variety and a credit to the region.

Our cabin was lovely -- pristine and much more spacious than I had ever imagined. It was a wonderful space to retire to for a nap or just a bit of alone time if needed...unusual on a boat. The bathroom was such a surprise in size and space. Hostesses Eve and Samantha did an excellent job of keeping it all neat as a pin and always at a convenient time for us. I don’t understand how they get everything done!

The Barge Lady provided us with well informed, organized, and seamless service, and nothing unclear of confusing prior to the cruise. I sum up our experience as outstanding, delightful, and beyond our expectations. I am envisioning another cruise in our future…..and I’ll know just who to call."

- Lisa Leiden, cruised June, 2016

"I can't say enough good things about this vacation. The crew of the Prosperite were ALL OUTSTANDING...professional, capable, but good-natured and a true pleasure each and every day on board. Herve, the Chef, cooked the ultimate French meals and I can honestly say I have never had meals this delicious ever! (And that's saying a lot considering I grew up in New Orleans, the food capital of the U.S.) He was even so kind as to use/serve ingredients I found in some of the small towns' markets that I found interesting, such as marinated octopus and artichokes. I personally walked along the canal path just about the entire trip, which I found very relaxing, and eliminated my fear of coming home 10 pounds heavier from all the wine and food! I especially enjoyed walking into the tiny villages just off the path. We loved the excursions to the Hotel Dieu in Beaune, the dinner at Abbaye de la Bussiere, and seeing the wine-making equipment of the 13th century. The boat was immaculately clean, and the crew kept it that way the entire time. Furnishings were comfortable and of excellent quality. Many thanks to you all at The Barge Lady for a perfect summer vacation! We will definitely consult you again for any barge trips we plan in the future!"

- Dr. & Mrs. Jospeh M. Kowalski, MD, cruised June, 2016
