Maïtena — from the Basque word maite, meaning “beloved” — feels perfectly named, not only for this adorable barge, but for the warm-hearted atmosphere shaped by French owner-operators Sandrine Walter and Maxime Mézergues.

Maxime serves as both Captain and Chef, expertly piloting Maïtena along the canals and, once moored, preparing creative Continental cuisine. Sandrine is Hostess and pastry chef, bringing thoughtful touches to life onboard while crafting decadent desserts for lunch and dinner. Also onboard is the Maïtena’s mascot, a sweet little Shi Tzu named Titom; do note his presence is completely optional.

Originally built in 1912 and recently restored from bow to stern, Maïtena now offers beautifully furnished public spaces and smartly appointed accommodations for up to four passengers. The lovely salon features lounge seating and a dining area, while the flower-festooned deck invites morning coffee, al fresco luncheons, sunset cocktails, and romantic nightcaps. Two cozy ensuite cabins with contemporary amenities provide petite sanctuaries of privacy.

This gracious hospitality extends ashore, reflecting Maïtena’s warm, intimate approach to travel. A highlight of the itinerary is joining Maxime and Sandrine at a local market to select seasonal produce and sumptuous cheeses, then returning to the galley to help transform those ingredients into a delicious dinner onboard. Beyond the market, lively excursions to villages and vineyards reveal the region’s refined appeal.
